okay i just put a PI heatsink on my northbridge chip to try to cool it a little better... the older smaller one (original) was held to the chip with a small metal wire (the thickness of a paperclip) and i could remove the clip and just switch out the sinks... right now i've got some cheap-ass radio shack heat paste on the chip, but i just was wonderin if this was a good idea (probably should have posted BEFORE i actually did the mod, but....:) ) it's on a dell dimension 8200 desktop, and i can post pics if anyone wants them....

depends on what P1 cooler, all the ones i've seen are pretty thin, some have fans, some dont. most likely it wont make a lick o' difference in your dell, considering it wont/doesn't overclock (unless you software o/c) and even if you did, performance would be similar, depending on what was on there before.

Hi,

You mean something like this?

NBHSF.jpg

Found an old P1 HSF, and used that to mount on the northbridge. Had to do an upside down can trick to pry off the old passive heatsink off. Then I applied some AS3 and mounted the P1 HSF by using zipties as you can see. It's ghetto, but it works. And also, the old passive cooler is now on the southbridge. It's mounted by using thermal tape. Overall, a simple mod and pretty sure it works. Hey, I been running this system for over 2years now and no problems :)

-Thanks

Giblet Plus!: just so you know. i hate you. :D

thanks for the input, no its not overclocked (damn dells) and actually i didn't know that you could software o/c... any sugguestions for that? i'm running XP.

i'm thinking of putting a fan on the new heatsink, maybe that will help a little... the cooler speed will help improve performance even though i'm not overclocked, right? not by huge gobs of power, but still... i can do it, so why not?

hmm... thermal tape (any suggestions?) for the old heatsink and the southbridge sounds like a good idea... might have to give that one a spin...

edit: uhh... when i said "cooler speed" i'm really hoping that i meant the cooler northbridge... yeah.

Giblet Plus!: just saw this, but what the hell is that card in the top middle of your first pic? IDE interface or something?

I'm just using a nice large aluminuim hs on my nb and a smaller scale copper hs on my sb

hmm.. actually that reminded me that i have a pretty large aluminum heat sink that i found dumpster diving a few weeks ago... i'll have to see if i can slap that on my northbridge, and move the other one to my southbridge. how much of an effect does all of that that have on performance, though?

i dont imagine it'd improve any tangible sort of performance. It might improve stability, but i doubt you're having stability problems. I've only heard of softfsb as far as software overclocks go, so you can look into that and see if it'll run with XP, i've never software overclocked before :p

allllrigty. thanks for the info for the software... i have school tomorrow  so i'll get to that some time tomorrow probably and let you know how that went. anyway, yea that's about what i'd think: that there's not a huge increase in performance... but if i can do it and even get a little bit more power outta my chips then, hey: i'm all for it.

SCSI? i gotcha... lol, thanks. that was bugging me : )
