My uncle grabbed this hp server for me before his work threw it out. I already gutted all the components in it. It was running a 486. Looks like this thing could have a lot of mod potential. Im having modders brain block though. Got any good ideas? So far im thinking i might have to make a new rear panel and re-tap holes for the mb since it doesnt look like standard atx. Anyone know any good sites for modding larger server cases or cubes like this?

Well, for one you will have to mod the backplane, not only for the I/O ports but for a powersupply as well, it looks like it was using a hefty PSU. For the I/O ports I would use a removable plate that comes with your mobo and measure out how much to cut so you can put in the removeable kind. As far as tapping the mobo tray, thats gonna be some planning. But yes, that box has a lot of potential. Im thinking watercooling where one side is a huge ass res with dual radiators in a push/pull config :D

yup, i should have mentioned that the back plate will probably need replacing. i was thinking just a big sheet of plexi. and also i was planning on watercooling. i should have mentioned that too, lol. you should see the size of the power supply i pulled from it. damn thing weighs a ton. im thinking of just throwing up and ebay auction for all the guts, im not even sure if they're worth anything.

sheet of acrylic/plexi for backplane = :tard:

sheet of aluminum (since it's easy to cut) =

you should pull out the front panel board and take some closeups... you may be able to use that lcd by hooking it to your parallel port... most of those displays are regular HD44780's also that scsi tray thing looks like it slides out... dunno if your planning on going scsi but im sure thats probably some horribly old 50pin scsi or something... so you will probably want to pull that out... that should give you like what... 7x 5.25 bays? you gotta load that sucker up with CD-R's... duplicator :D

for copying your home movies or something completely legal like that...

also you could put like a 5" video LCD up in the front for winamp coolmon etc... just another idea

backpanel definately out of alu... fill that sucker with loads of quiet 120mm fans, what are your system specs?

you on water?

you better be with that case, its begging for a nice WC rig in there... mmm...

the pump/rad etc on the right side and the mobo on the left side, yummy :)

How much for a decent 5" lcd though? Are they expensive? Im pretty much LCD retarded. I know pretty much nothing about them. Definately a few 120mm's. I do want to watercool it. I was thinking along the lines of the same thing. water equipment on the right side and mb on the left. should make it a nice and clean look. Im watercooling my current rig already. Specs are in the sig. Heres some pics of the internals i took out. Also some closeups of the lcd. (not 56k friendly)

Replace the rectangle in the top left with an LCD or VFD (I know you said you were LCD retarded but it only take a little research, shouldn't be too hard). Then sand down all of the metal sides and polish them to a mirror finish (use English Custom Polish to make them chrome looking). Replace the front bezel with your own custom made aluminum front (also polished)

edit: also make your own 5-1/4 bays or whatever out of aluminum too :D And if you need to have depth to the front, put a sheet of clear 1/4" acrylic over it.

Your main priority is the backside of the case though, if you can't rework that, its pointless to do anything else to the case.

I was thinking that too. theres no point in messing with it if i cant get an atx board to fit with a new backpanel. ill probably just focus on that first.

After looking closer at the backplate i started to get a little dissapointed. its not going to be easy to replace it. But im still going to try. any good places for sheets of aluminum for fairly cheap?
