I has an old 1997(ish) beige box that I've completely torn down. I plan on modding it, but I'm strapped for ideas.. I would post a pic of what it looked like together, but umm.. too late for that.

That's close. the only differences are 1. No holes in side panels and 2. front is a smidgen different.

Yes it's fugly as it gets, but that's the point of a mod. :D

I'm thinkin' about stealin some ideas from OfficerMartinez's dell HTPC mod - bondo'd fan blow hole things on the front, a window, some lights. I'm not a fan of bright colors, so the color scheme will probably be black, gray, red, blue or a shade of brown.

I would like to keep everything internal. 1 (max) optical drive, and as much space for HDD's as possible. I <3 storage. Silence will probably be a factor, but not a major one. I'll probably grab up 4 or 8 yate loons (if there's still that kickin' deal 4/$19) and load it with the low speed YL's. Bad thing is, the exhaust fan on the back is an 80mm. That'll have to be modded to 12cm or umm.. kept 80mm

case stats.

standard ATX case, 4 optical bays, 2 external 3.5'' bays, and 1 internal 3.5'' as it came from the factory. ATX PSU on the top of the case and 2 80mm fans 1 up front 1 in the back.

All that is subject to change. I loathe 80mm fans, and I don't need more than 1 dvd/blu ray drive. :)

thoughts, ideas umm.. what would you do's. I'm all up for ideas and I'll start this pretty soon. Like I said, the case is broken down already so I can pretty much paint it whatever color I want. I can upload pix of the variouis parts. This would be my first major mod (breaking it down to scraps, and rebuilding it up) I'm very comfortable with power tools, and I like to think I'm moderately skilled with a dremel, but I suck at spelling :p
 
Might want to post some pics of the inside and the rear.

I'd probably put a side panel window on this thing as the outline is already there waiting for you to jigsaw it out. Next, take a look at the 80mm fan outlet in the back and see if you can cut it out and make it fit a 120mm fan. Same for the front 80mm intake.

I don't know about the front of the case has pretty crappy design. Anyway after that I'll sand it down prime it and paint it. If going for water cooling see where you can accommodate a radiator. With painting done, hook it up with some low speed YL as you suggested and put some sound deadening material down.

I'm all up for suggestions.

I'll probably window this beast, and relocate the hard drives. Probably build a cage and strap it to the ground, put wheels on it and 2 intake fans on teh case floor. Probably a fan or two on the case top.

I might w/c this I might not. There's not really a budget for it, yet, so it's all up in the air. The part I'm most concerned with is the front bezel. Any tips to that (bondo, fiber glass ... ) will be appreciated. I don't have a ton of tools readily available to do huge cuts (I'll have to make a trip over to a relatives house for that) but welding and whatnots aren't out of the question.

Let the suggestions roll.
 
how do ya test? It cuts really easy with my dremmel.. and it's relatively light.

Also, I haven't cleaned it yet... I'm guessing it's a 97-00 case. Not completely sure. Latest '01
 
hmm light and easy to cut sounds like aluminium to me.

Ah yea Its aluminium. I'm looking at your pictures and I see it isn't steel. Steel would've dulled in the surface and wouldn't have that shine that aluminium has.
 
Looks like that cheapie case steel. It's kind of a galvanized stuff, not like the gray tint from good Cooler Master or InWin, etc.
