Hey all! Normally when I build a comp, I install a CPU and RAM and the whole nine yards. This time I was building an drive expander box for my server so I just needed a motherboard to power up my expander card. I opted for an Asus P5G41C-M LX and when I powered the mobo, I heard no beeps from the speaker. With no cpu or ram installed, wouldn't it beep something at me? I just wanted to make sure this mobo is DOA before I continue with the rest of the system.

FYI - I plugged in both the 24pin and 4pin power cables from the PSU. Fans came on. Unfortunately there are no LED readouts or anything that I can get more info from. I'm just waiting for the beeps.

Stupid question - you've plugged the speaker on the case into the mobo, right? The motherboard itself does not have a speaker.

Yes I did. Pretty sure it doesn't matter which way I install it but I've tried both ways. Still nothing =/

Now, I may be wrong, but I do believe a CPU needs to be present for POST testing to actually being. AFAIK the CPU gets woken up by a special signal when power comes on, then the CPU proceeds to read the POST instructions from CMOS and then proceeds to test all the components. So, no CPU, no POST, no beeps.

So then I'm going to assume everything is OK w. the mobo if the fans are coming on. Thanks guys!

That's a pretty expensive backplane, heh.

I would be interested if it even powers on the ports with no CPU, I think it should but you never know.

Yea I think it was a mistake to go this route. The pci lanes power up the card but not without some modifications. Thought this would be a lot more straight forward.
