I was planning on getting these 3 things but newegg has that sale on the P4 6XX line with mobos, here is what I was going to get:

That extra 1MB of L2 cache isn't a whole lot faster, because the larger cache take a hit in latency. You do get EM64T, and the ability to run X86-64 binaries just like all of the A64 owners out there, so the 6xx chip is a little more future proof. But I don't think it justifies the 33% price premium on the same clocked 5xx chip. Also, #2 is going to be as cheap as #1 only if you're willing to deal with huge loss of performance from running single channel DDR. You need a matched pair of RAM modules for both systems. DDR2 is definitely not worth the price premium - it's only even with DDR1 in performance and costs a lot more. Also, anybody who buys a 915/925 system this late in the game is going to be sorry - they don't support dual core. The 945/955 that's coming Real Soon Now will support dual core. That 1GB kit of Mushkin for under $130 is a pretty good value, buy it regardless of which mobo/CPU you get. Both of the motherboards look pretty good, but I think the Abit will be a little more OC friendly.
 
I'd go with the Abit board over the Gigabyte. Any day of the week. The previous post is correct. The current chipsets will not support the new dual core processors. Since you don't seem to be familiar with those I'll cover it basically.

Since the processor manufacturers have basically hit a clock speed wall with Silicon in general, they've decided to take another approach to performance. What they are going to do is create a CPU that actually has two CPU cores on a single die. Package them together in what looks like a uni-processor Pentium 4 or A64 package and the end result will be true SMP (Symetric Multi-Processing) on a single processor that works in a single socketted motherboard.

Basically they will bring dual CPU's to the masses now. But they will be in a single cheaper package. So you needed run out and buy a $500 motherboard and two processors to get SMP.

Basically applications will have to be written as multithreaded to take advantage of this. Some programs do already, Windows XP Professional for example will work in SMP mode, so it's covered as are most all the Adobe software packages and all your high end stuff.

Games and things like that as well as more basic apps will likely not see any performance increase with the new processors at first. Not until newer versions of the applications come out that are SMP capable.

AMD's Athlon 64's will supposedly be compatible with current socket 939 motherboards. While Intel's dual core processors will be socket LGA775 like the 500 and 600 series, however Intel has already stated that new chipsets will be launched to handle the new processors. They've been dubbed the i945 and i955x chipsets.

Of course current CPU's will be pin and electrically compatible with the new motherboards so you can use your current CPU's for the new boards. But the new CPU's will not work in the i915 and i925X/i925XE based motherboards.
 
Are there any specs out there for the new chipsets? Like how much they are going to be, and what kind of ram do they accept?
 
Google for Glenwood and Lakeport, the code names of 945 and 955 respectively.
 
what if i got the Abit AG8 and a 2.8ghz now, then just wait until the new cpu's and mobo's come out and sell the AG8 and 2.8ghz to my folks. It will depend on when the chipset comes out, it says here that it will come out the middle of this year. It also depends on how much $ it will be as well. Another question, will that Mushkin 1GB PC3200 work with these new boards or is it all DDR2 for those?
