Hey guys, my roommate plays a lot of WoW (that's the only "new" game he plays) on his HP laptop that's running a Mobility Radeon Xpress 200. Today he told me that it seems kind of choppy for him, so I had him pull up his fps and here he was only getting mid teens just walking around, so I'm sure it gets into the single digits in any type of heavy combat. Now, I'm a bit in the dark here as I'm only familiar with the nVidia side of things here, and that's on the actual desktop video card deal, not integrated mobile stuff.

Anyways, he's gone at the moment so I can't actually do anything with WoW because it's password protected, but I checked his driver settings and his AA/AF is application preference, so I don't know if any of that stuff's on, but his "main settings" under direct3D are set to balanced, which as the Texture Preference and Mipmap Detail Level both set to High Quality. Unless he has some settings cranked in game (which I doubt, from the quick glances I've had the IQ isn't that great), the only thing I can think to do is lower those IQ settings down to maybe performance or even high performance. I've never messed with the high performance/performance settings there, so I don't know how crappy it'll look for him.

The only other thing I could think of to get those frames reasonable would be to update his drivers, as he's running whatever catalyst was released 12/27/04. So, for one, I'm not sure whether this chipset uses the standard Catalyst for desktop cards or a specific mobile driver. Also, has there been any sizeable performance increase in the ATI drivers with WoW over the past year, or would upgrading them only give 4-5fps (which may actually be significant in my friend's case).

Any other suggestions for boosting performance would be great, I know I don't have any details on what settings he's actually running, but I can post those later on tonight.

Thanks.

Theres not much you can do..
The xpress 200 is pretty much the same as onboard video. It helps a little bit with the extra memory for watching dvds but its really not made for gaming at all..

Even with everything turned down on a game like WoW, its still not going to perform well.. :(

Yeah, I've come to realize this. The good news for my friend though was that he had 4x AA enabled in game, so the combination of updating the driver, disabling AA and a few other in game detail settings, he's up from averaging ~15fps to ~30-40 fps. His IQ is pretty bad, but it wasn't that great to start with and he cares more about performance, so he's a happy camper now.

Good to hear.
I LOVE the system reqs for WoW and wish they made SWG a little easier on computers. I came close to buying a laptop just so I can play SWG, but couldn't bring myself to pay +$1500 for a laptop just to play it.. With WOW, I can get a cheaper laptop and still play it. :p
