Mobility 5850 (M15x) eyefinity?

Hello all,

Sorry for the wall of text... I have scoured the internet for hours seeking an answer to this question and while I never found the answer I did find this site which seems to have the most hardware knowledgable people around! Maybe you can help me.

I have an Alienware M15x laptop with a ATI Mobility Radeon 5850 graphics card.
I see that this card supports eyefinity (from ATI's website) The M15x has two video outputs a standard VGA and a Display Port. I guess, therefor, that I could run two additional screens and my laptop screen for a total of 3.

But the laptop screen is only 15". Ideally I'd like to run 3x24" monitors (i.e. shut off the laptop screen and run 3 external monitors). Is there anyway I can do this on the M15x? My searches have turned up the phrase "daisy chaining" in relation to display port. This seems to suggest the possibility of running multiple monitors off a singe display port output... Is this possible?

I also see that dell sell this Multi-Monitor Hub Adaptor. Reading the description it seems that it allows 3 monitors from a single display port. Des anyone know if this solution would work with eyefinity to produce the desired effect?

Any help massively appreciated! I see that HP produce a laptop that has the same card and runs eyefinity... though that laptop has an additional HDMI out... I really hope its possible on the M15x too as I can't afford to build a whole new system just for this feature :(

While daisy-chaining monitors is supported through displayport 1.2, the 5xxx series cards are not DP 1.2 compliant, so in all likelihood it would not work.

I would also be a bit suspicious about that vga port, im willing to guess that being a laptop chip, there were some things stripped out of it for the sake of size/heat/power so that vga out may just be a replacement signal for the laptop screen. Though if you CAN run 3 monitors, your setup would probably be more conducive to playing strategy type games as running 3 monitors at native resolution (around 1680x1050 for 24s) would be pretty taxing on a 5850 in FPS games, depending on graphics settings that is.

Thanks for the input grunt! I guess the daisychaining is out of the question.

Regarding the graphical ability of the 5850 you can see it running Dirt 2 in eyefinity on the HP envy 17 which has the same specs as my M15x in this video

This is basically exactly what I want to do on my M15x. The only difference is that the HP machine has an extra video out (HDMI). Looks like that Dell hub might be the only way of getting it to work... anyone used it?

The HP is the only laptop I've heard of that can do Eyefinity.Basically you're out of luck. I don't think any monitor hub will work because that would have been reported somewhere already, but I don't know for sure.

e: I should correct myself, I thought you were looking to do gaming on the 3 displays. You can probably run 3 monitors with TH2GO and maybe that Dell product for normal desktop work. You can't run any games adequately at the huge resolution of 5760x1200 on a single mobile GPU anyway, except maybe Source games.
