im planning on building a computer for my 1987 Volvo240DL. what i plan on accomplishing is:
1) ability to store my music collection for mobile playback
2) ability to go wardriving (10+ known hotspots within a 5 mile radius of my house)
3) driving directions in conjuncion with MS Streets and Maps (so i dont have to print out directions from mapquest)
4) give the passenger something to do (watch DVD, play minesweeper, play CS at hotspot)
5) enlarge my ePenis

im looking at a VIA Epia M10000 system with a 7" widescreen touchscreen. i also want the ability to take this out of my car (for security and to use to troubleshoot networks, computers, and the such)
here are my proposed system specs:

Casetronic C138 (fits in lower console compartment) - (http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info.php/cPath/23/products_id/141)
256MB PC2100 Generic from newegg
Samsung 40GB Notebook Drive - (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-501&depa=1)
Lite-on Notebook CD-RW/DVD-ROM - (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-559&depa=1)
XTERASYS 11Mbps Wireless PCI (for this system) - (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=33-147-102&depa=0)
JUSTEC JW11U Wireless-B USB Dongle (forwireless connection to my main pc or to another PC) - (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=33-326-101)
Lilliput 7" Wide Screen - (http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info.php/cPath/52/products_id/193)
or
Lilliput 8" (non widescreen) - (http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info.php/cPath/52/products_id/242)

any comments/suggestions would be appreciated

PS: im getting my alternator rebuilt, as it doubt a stock 87 volvo can handle my 2 10" subs along with a computer.

MS MapPoint is a lot better and can work with NetStumbler... also they can share the GPS with netstumbler scripts

if i were you try to get a regular slot loading DVD rom or something and take the guts of a USB2/firewire case... put the CDRom with the IDE/USB or firewire adapter in your dash or wherever and hook it into the PC under your chair or wherever your going to hide it...

more easily accessable and then if you leave the PC in the car chances are the theif will just steal your DVD-Rom which is a much smaller loss than the entire pc no?

are you sure that wireless card will work well with netstumbler? i have had the best luck so far with the Dell TrueMobile 1150 802.11b PCMCIA card in a PCI adapter... the Senao 200mW cards are also popular due to their radio strength...

i'll look into mappoint. i already have a nice CD player head unit in my car, which i'll use when i dont need/ dont have the computer in the car. the head unit also has aux inputs, which is handy because i have 4 speakers and 2 subs already wired to it, and i have all the equalizer settings just how i like it. i have a lower console place, intended for CB radios and such, so i was thinking of modifying that (im not gonna resell this car, i'll drive it until it dies). as with the wireless card, i ust picked the cheapest card, which people had success with using d-link drivers.

is it possible to connect the external antenna to my existing radio antenna, or would that nor work/cause unwanted interference? also, does netstumbler have a list of cards that it'll only work for?

net stubmler should work with any cards that support NDIS, but it likes some more than others, their forums are probably the best place to ask that kind of question

as for the antenna it will not work, standard car radio antenna's are competely different from 2.4Ghz microwave antennas

Score...another volvo driver (I drive a '83 2door). One thing my friend and I though of while wardriving was how cool it would be to use the cars antenna for our purposes.

None of the magnetic antenna on the roof crap...just pull out the wire from the casette player, plug in and have a go :D

I'm sure some circuit would have to be built for everything to work properly, but frig...it wouldn't be so obvious

kool, i was gonna build a carputer, but my subs and amops take up all the spare room under my rerar seat. I have an extended cab truck, so no trunk. Fortunately i just purchased a bada$$ dell 9100 laptoop that will be here in about a week or two. Coupled with my 2-800watt subs, 1800 watt amp, and pioneer deh830mp headunit. i will rock it all. I have an inverter that i am mounting with the extra power cable for my lapppy so i dont have to tote the power cable around. I have an fm modulator for the sound interface, but i am getting the ip-bus adaptor so i dont loose my midranges. I still want to carputer my 91 Acura integra out though. Got the perfect spot below my radio for a slot load, and liliput touch lcd.

good luck man
