According to the spec sheets the Mobile P4 1M Prescott 533FSB CPUs should have the ability to change the multiplier using software regardless of chipset, ....

P70 of the 30242403.pdf:

6.3 Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology

The processor will feature Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology. Unlike previous implementations of Intel SpeedStep technology, this technology will enable the processor to switch between multiple voltage and operating frequency points instead of two. This will enable superior performance with optimal power savings. Switching between states will be software controlled unlike previous generation processor implementations where the GHI# pin was used to toggle between two states. Following are the key features of Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology:

• Multiple voltage/frequency operating points provide optimal performance at the lowest power.
• Voltage/Frequency selection will be software controlled by writing to processor MSRs (Model Specific Registers) thus eliminating chipset dependency.

Now is this word "software" what I think it means, or is it technospeak for something else entirely? I'm obviously hoping it means a GUI in Windows to change the speed of the CPU and that it will do so on a desktop mobo.

Anyone clarify? And if it does mean that then what's is it and where can I find it? (nothing on Intels site looked obvious to me).

I have a Mobile Prescott 3.06 1M and it does 14x muiltiplier in desktop boards and does an easyish 4Ghz. I'll have another soon as well.

Also, Just as an aside .........while on the subject of P4Ms and unlocked multipliers, Remember the tales from a couple of years back of people putting P4M CPUs in desktop boards and seeing the multiplier was "adjustable", then it never doing it again for them, ......well I never believed them either until a week ago when it happened to me!!

Mobile 3.06 (no HT) in an Asus P4P800SE and the multiplier WAS adjustable in BIOS!!! Rebooted and it was locked again at 12x and UNABLE to make it do it again. Personally I don't think it was "actually" adjustable, but to have disbelieved the story for these years and to see it for myself was very weird.

Ignore that though it's the New Intel Speedstep on the Prescotts I want info about.

are you sure it adjusts the multiplier or the fsb? I think that my p4m halves the fsb down to 100 when it wants do downclock, tbh though I haven't checked in awhile.

Only to 14, though, since the smallest ratio on the Prescott is 14. Northwoods go down to what, 6 or 7? I know at least 8. I'm pretty sure speedstep on a prescott-m would involve cutting the bus speed in half, unless they changed the architecture on the mobile prescott-m's.
