I'm looking for a small USB DAC+Headphone Amp to use with my smartphone (current a Nexus 6P, might upgrade to a Pixel 2 depending on reviews). I'm looking hard at the Audioquest Dragonfly Black v1.5 or Red:

They seem to have to good reviews overall, especially the Red. Though I've also read that Android has issues with controlling volume due to its weird USB implementation.

Wanted to know what everyone elses uses, if applicable, or recommends with their smartphone.

I'd skip the phone + dac/amp combo and just move to something like this:

I've had one for a few months and I love it. Maybe a bit bulky compared to a phone, but if you're planning on using dongles and an amp that's a moot point. Unlike a smartphone it's got two removable microSD slots (so a total of ~500gb of storage at the moment) and has a decent enough amp to drive my 250ohm DT880s.

since I just use my phone to provide outside noise blocking /background music while reading or whatever in public I use an elecom lbt-par150 (aac) bluetooth receiver /amp w/ my ath-m50x's while out and about works well sq is pretty good and it is SUPAR to not be physically tethered to phone.

I'm generally just listening to spotify not hi res files however
