Mobile computing upgrade --Taylor/Tyler compatibility?

Hi all,

Got a buddy's laptop here, a Gateway MX6453 which has a 90nm AMD Turion X2 TL-52 (Taylor) processor. It runs awfully warm, and I'm concerned that it may be a little unstable due to that.

I'm thinking that upgrading to a 65nm Tyler-core CPU (e.g., a TL-56 or TK-53) may reduce temperatures, but I'm not sure of compatibility. A faster CPU isn't really that necessary, so either of these would do, I'd just like to decrease the operating temperature. Bus speeds appear similar, and both chips have a DDR2 memory controller, which is what I need. These procs are also available cheap on Fleabay, so it'd be relatively easy, provided compatibility isn't an issue. Has anyone tried something like this?

nah even the 65nm's run hot.. the problem with the turion, especially if you have vista, is that the cool 'n quiet doesnt work.. but the one bonus of the turion is they can be undervolted like a mofo..

it should help drop the temps on that laptop.. i currently have my turion x2 TL-60 running 1.000v(stock is 1.1750v) @ 10x multi and it tappers down to 5x @ .8250v it dropped my idle temps from 50C to 32C on core 0 and 54C to 36C on core 1..

also you can set the program to have a delay.. so for example mines setup to 500ms before it switches to a higher clock.. so the cpu has to sit at 85% load for 500ms before it will raise the clock speed to needed clock.. then its set to a 100ms delay to drop it back down.. so if it falls below 85% cpu usage for more then 100ms it will start dropping down to the lower multipliers..

the only problem with swapping cpu's between the 65nm and 90nm is that you have to know for sure that the bios will support the 65nm.. so look through the similar models of that laptop and see if any where sold with the 65nm x2.. if so then it will most likely work because they usually dont change the motherboards between sub models..
