Can the mobile A64 be used on the regular desktop 754 motherboards?

I'm running a 3200+ DTR on my machine now right now. Make sure your heatsink clears.
 
and make sure your mobo clears too. that's actually a DTR chip you got listed there, but not all mobo's will take mobile/dtr cpus :(

I looked at that. thats the nf3 chipset, while the one I linked is nf4. I've also heard that while the DFI's overclockwell, they can be a bit unstable as well.
What would be the advantage of using an nf3 chipset over an nf4 chipset?
Also, how di I confirm that this is in fact, a DTR, and outside of the marketing jargon for DeskTop Replacement, what is the differnce between the DTR and the normal mobile clawhammer 754s?
 
DTR = 82.5w, 1.5v stock voltage
Mobile = 62w, 1.4v stock voltage

i take it you need a pci-e mobo then?

Not neccesarily. This will be a second box, though I was considering a pci-e x800gto2. It's not a requirement, however, and if there are reasons to go with the nf3 chipset, I would consider getting an agp card for it.

/edit my current p4 rig still uses agp as well. I'd like to move my gaming to this A64 rig though, perhaps, and use my p4 for all my other stuff. (I cant handle working on non-ht or non-smp machines for non-gaming stuff, drives me nuts.)
 
I can get the gto2 locally for 199.99, and tend to prefer ATi cards overall.
Any way to check if said mobo supports the DTR chips? Isn't DTR just a fancy name for mobiles with a bit more stock voltage? Is it a clawhammer, or what?

i think almost all 754 mobo's support mobiles.
 
i've seen some that won't boot, or can't change the multi from 4x.. this might have been changed though.

no desktop board will say it supports mobiles.. amd would come down pretty hard on the mfg if they did.
 
OK, questions I'd still like answered, if there are answers...

Is the DTR just a mobile clawhammer with bumped up voltage?
Does it have the old memory controller, or a new one?
How well do these OC?
Can someone recommend a HSF for this, as I'm sure I'll need one that bolts directly to the MOBO as there is no heatspreader on this.

1) sorta, it's more that a DTR is basically a lidless desktop chip rated to 95c. the mobile is the same, but can do it at 1.4v

2) what do you mean? it's a CG clawhammer, they're all basically the same

3) luck is still required, but i've seen em break 2.8ghz

4) anything that screws down is nice. the zalman 7000 alcu is nice, the swiftech with the heliocoid pins, there's an alpha heatsink.. yeah

5) water vapor refracts blue light from the sun ;)

1. Hmm, so a mobile might actually have more headroom than the DTR chips? Or the mobiles aren't put out at stock speed quite as high?

2. Wasn't sure of the "DTR"s were just clawhammers or what.

3. 400MHz over stock doesn't seem like all that much, though I shouldn't complain, my latest P4 barely does that (spioled by 2.0 at 3.2 in earlier times, or other earlier insane OCs I've gotten in the past). a 15% overclock is fair enough, i suppose, though.

4. I'll look into the zalman, would prefer quiet.

5. sunlight is yellow! everyone knows that, and you cant fool me.

3) eh.. it's a 130nm claw. they typically didn't have a lot of headroom over stock :(

5) heh, the sun emits the full visible spectrum, it is really white. the scattering of blue into the sky takes some blue out of the appearance of the sun, making it appear yellow :D

3.) even stock it'll be faster at games than my p4 2.8c @ 3.3 and 9800pro, so I'll go ahead and build it.

5.) the moon is made of cheese.

ah, that's old though, technically the CG's memory controller pales a bit in comparison to revE cpu's, but it's all ok. unless you plan on running 4 sticks, you won't really notice the difference
