I am thinking about getting the 2600+ but I've been reading that the motherboard doesn't reconize this proccessor and underclocks it. What should I expect when booting up my comp for the first time? Also, what should I overclock the chip to? My setup is:

AMD Mobile 2600+ w/ ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu
ABIT "NF7-S" nForce2(version 2)
Corsair 184 Pin 1G(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
RADEON 9800 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit
 
i'd say go w/ the DFI LANParty II (two) Ultra Revision B for OCing...it's a beast...

as for multipliers, you'll have to play w/ them yourself, each chip is different...
 
It doesn't recognize it and sets the multipliers lower then its stock defaults. BUT you just need to push the multipliers up and your processor will take off. But still be unrecognized. Its just because Bios' were never designed to recognize mobile chips on desktop boards.
 
I have a 2600+ mobile. It all depends on your motherboard. I have an epox 8k3a with a kt33a chipset, so my max FSB is 166. That means with the default maximum multiplier my mobo allows(12.5) I can only run it at about 2.2ghz, (I pushed fsb to 175ish). So in order to get the most out of this cpu (2.5 ghz) I have to short some pins on the socket of the CPU to get it to run at 15x. Here is a guide :

I love this processor, it's just a bit more work if you dont have the 200hz bus.
 
The whole POINT of the mobile2600+ is you have control over the multiplier, etc.

It's irrelevent what the bios recognizes, you set it to "user defined" and define it.

top end typically on air... 230Mhz x11- to- 250Mhz x10 depending on other items in the system. It's currently the best AthalonXP you can buy for your $.
 
the new bios for the lanparty is supposed to include microcode for the mobile cpus, it will probably detect the 2600 mobile as what it is
 
Well it's going to be my first cpu overclock so I read the overclocking FAQ at the top of this forum. It said that overclocking the FSB means that I have to change the RAM etc. I don't want to mess anything up so should I just change the multiplier?

edit: That lanparty board is pretty expensive since I'm building this comp on a budget
