MKV vs ISO

In starting my movie collection, I have been using MakeMKV for my BD rips and it has worked just fine. In reading other threads, it seems that people also rip the movie to an ISO file. Question...is there any difference? The movie should be identical, correct? Is there an advantage to using an ISO that I don't understand yet? Sorry if this is an easy question, still learning a lot as I go. Thanks.

No difference in quality just different in that MKV's are a more flexible container. Stick with the MKVs

If you're backing up your DVD collection digitally I prefer ISO's because it is an exact copy of the disk you stuck in. So you get the menu's and extra features etc. Unless I'm mistaken you can't do that with mkv's.

If you just want to rip the movie, then mkv's are fine.

Since I am just interested in having the movie, no menus or extras, it seems that MKV is what I will stick with. Thanks much.

ISO and MKV's are containers. The ISO will be bigger and contain everything.. even if you dont want it. I prefer MKV's as I can mux what I want into it. Saves space.. esp for all the extra audios stuff. But if you want all the extras.. Then ISO would be easier.

It depends on how you rip it. Generally MKV encodes are a % of the original BD's quality and strip out the HD Audio streams. If you intend to get some halfway decent HT setup, I'd recommend leaving it to ISO format (strip out the previews, etc) or converting the HD Audio streams to flac.

I care more about the quality of what I'm watching/hearing than quantity. So I have 3x1.5TB drives for Blu-ray disc images and 1x1.5TB for DVD disc images. On average I have 40 blu-ray discs per 1.5TB drive.
