Mixing Serial ATA and EIDE drives?

I'm considering adding a Serial ATA hard drive to my system as the primary drive, with a standard EIDE drive as secondary. Before ordering, though, I wanted to make sure that mixing interfaces wouldn't cause any major problems.

Also, my motherboard has a built in SATA raid controller. Since I'll have only one SATA drive connected, will I need to set the raid controller up in any way, or should it just be Plug 'n' Play, more or less? Thanks in advance :)

I just did that to my rig,I added a 120G seagate SATA and I still use my 200G WD 8Mg as PATA on my IDE of coures. All you have to do is make a few setting changes in your BIOs.On my Max3 I have a setting called (combined ATA) were you use a PATA and a SATA with the SATA as master.I also have other settings for that but this is the one you will need.Since you have a ASUS your BIOs may say something a little diffrent. And also make sure that you specify to boot first off your SATA and not just HDD drive or you may get a NTLRD error message.Any problems just post back since I just went tru all this a few days ago and it didnt go without errors in my case.

generally its primary, secondary, other

Primary and Secondary refering to just the normal onboard IDE\ATA\ATAPI channels

if there happens to be a Onboard RAID controller
they are sometimes refered to as IDE2 and IDE3 (or 3 & 4 )
(Primary being IDE0 secondary IDE1)

not positive as to what the SATA ports are being described as
they might replace the IDE2&3, they might just be "other" like SCSI, IDE RAID cards, or other Host Bus Adapters

and you ask, why in the hell is he rambling like this?
Because when I first read the post I was a bit confused and had to read it again :p

Which in a very round about way brings me to the point
there isnt alot of SATA standard descriptions, and options in BIOS
so as sharkdiver420 pointed out, youll have to hunt around

they are compatible, but the config options can occassionaly be elusive
Good Luck ;)

Thanks a bunch guys. Without you kind [H] folks, I would probably just set fire to my PC and take up needlepoint. :D

Have the same motherboard that you do and just did this over the last 3 days.

1.First you will need to flash the bios to the latest one 1007.

2.Make sure you change the jumper on the motherboard to turn the sata on.

3.make sure you have a floppy with the sata drivers when installing windows.

4. Set the boot order to SCSI if you are putting the OS on the sata.

I had the 1006 Bios for this motherboard and it would not see the sata controller to install , so once you have the latest bios it is fairlly simple. Just have the floppy ready when you install windows and you will be golden.
