mixing ram speeds???

hi, i have a question for you guys, from my last pc, i have two sticks of pc2700(pny) left, just sitting there and im thinking about taking the 512 stick, and putting it in my new pc, so i could run a gig off ram(this would only be temperary though, until i get the funds to by another 512 of pc3200)

so, my question is, is there anything horribly bad about doing this?

i was thinking, that it would run games better, and be more efficent... am i wrong?

You'll have more RAM but the 2700 will create a bottleneck. So the RAM isn't going to run any faster than the 2700 sticks

I've always been told. you're computer will only run as fast as the slowest component in it...
 
Well, the PC-3200 memory will only be able to run at the maximum speed and lowest latency settings of your PC-2700 memory. However, it's possible you're not running faster than the PC-2700 could or with lower latency than the PC-2700 can manage anyways --so definitely find out, and it could be you'll only have benefits from adding the memory.

So here's the thing to do: Find out what your FSB speed is. If it's 166(333)mhz or lower, the PC-2700 will be able to keep up with the PC-3200.

If it's higher than 166, the PC-2700 may be able to manage it, but again may not. You won't know till you try.

You won't know the latency of the PC-2700 till you try putting it in your system. Before you do so, go into your BIOS and record your current memory latencies. Then try adding the PC-2700. If the latency gets higher, it means the PC-2700 can't run with as low a timing as the PC-3200. You'll have to decide if the performance trade off (more ram for a slower latency) is worth it or not :).
