Mixing and Matching

So i went over to my cousins house the other day and i started talking about routers and how i was going network 2 of my computers toeghtoer. Its over quite a range so i am going to do it wirelessly. So he went into his back room and gave me a netgear 11g wireless reciever. So i was wondering since i have a linksys router at home, is it ok to mix and match brand names when networking computers?
 
yes... as long as the base-station and NIC are using the same standard, i.e. 802.11?, it will work fine...
 
Couple of questions. What is quite a range? And what router do you have? As long as it has 802.11b or 802.11g functionality it'll be fine.
