Hi all,
I have the following issue.
I have my own system this way configured:
- PIII 933 qdi main board
- 120GB maxtor ide drive (primary ide ctrl)
- cd/dvd rom samsung (secondary ide ctrl)
- cdr/rw plextor (secondary ide ctrl)
- windows xp pro SP1 + all updates
everything is well working (but my 120GB is quite full and two years of installing and uninstalling apps made the system a bit slow in boot and shutdown)
because of this I thought to add a 200Gb drive and reinstall everything, keeping the old disk online for restoring purposes.
Later when everything would have been up and running, I'd formatted it and kept it as storage space.
well,
I have added
- one sata card with chip Silicon Image
- one 200Gb maxtor sata drive
the goal:
- install XP on the new SATA
- boot from it now and on
- use for some time the old ide for restoring purposes
the sequence:
- installed XP Pro SP2 + all from windows update on the SATA drive
- installation were ok
- started using the system from the SATA drive
everything ok but..
my CD/DVD reader and my CD BURNER are not enabled. This mean that in the MyComputer/hardware/periferal management they are reported with the yellow icon
the system were not changed, so I changed the bios back to boot from IDE 0 and restarted it from the other drive, well
my CD/DVD and my CD BURNER get back, not only, the new 200GB sata drive were properly installed, recognized and were there ready to be used... I also tried to copy back and forward from/to it: fine and fast.
You may guess it.. I unplugged the 120GB ide drive and restarted the system with the sata.
Without the ide drive connected the cd drives are there ready to use.
Now,
do any of you have an idea about this?
- Hardaware system, in all the tests, is left unchanged
- Windows system is both cases XP Pro, with exception that ide is with SP1 + all updates while sata is SP2 with all updates (but I think this makes not the difference)
Why booting with sata drive makes cd and cdr to be marked withthe yellow icon in the system hardware management while booting with the ide makes them not?
And,
why starting from the sata with ide unplugged makes the cd and cdr to be ready?
