Would a 4890 add anything to a 6950 in crossfire? Or would the addition of a slower card with less VRAM just cripple the 6950?
 
Nope, you can't do that, unless you have one of those lucid hydra chipsets. Even then, I wouldn't recommend doing that. The 6950 is more than powerful enough for almost every game in single screen gaming.
 
Even if you could, you'd only get HD4890 crossfire speeds, which is barely any faster than the HD6950 on its own.
