mitx case/psu help please

I found this mobo a couple days ago (http://www.commell.com.tw/Product/SBC/LV-674.HTM). It has inspired me to make a mitx comp :p I'd be using every feature on it completely, and I really don't need anyting more that what is on it (except a vid card).

Problems arose when looking for parts.

It says that I should use a EPS mobo (or something with a 8pin connector). I don't want to use a 4pin to 8pin convertor, as I think power convertors are scary.

Being new to this, I went and looked for a case that would hold a EPS/ATX psu. Didn't find one.

After emailing the mobo company, they suggested something over 300w. I then looked for a flexatx or mitx psu that was over 300w. Didn't exist (plus I was gonna put a 7800gt in here, and I doubt a 300w would boot it).

Thinking for a bit, I decided that I should try and make my own case. I could just go and throw in a normal ATX power supply then (like a cheap 500w EPS one that I found). One of my problems is that I wouldn't know where to weld the screw holes. Does anyone have some sort of reference pic?

Also, do know of any products that I don't know about? any suggestions? help?

btw, what is the difference between an EPS and ATX power supply?
 
Vultureman, honestly I think you would be better off going with a mATX board if you are going to run a high powered system. The board is insanely small, but the boxey dimensions of a normal PSU and the length of the 7800GT are going to screw up the cute size advantage. Not to mention that the Commell boards are 4 times as expensive as your average mATX board!

Never heard of EPS, but reading up on it, it looks like the only difference is the 8-pin power connector, which is normally used to power server boards. Probably an extra 4 extra pins of 12V goodness for future power hungry Pentiums. ;)

Anyway, if you do get the Commell, get the LV-673. Same board with support for a cool and power friendly Dothan. :cool: Dothans game better than any s775 chip and even faster than A64s. I'll bet it doesn't need an EPS power supply, either.

You could also consider using a 1U power supply: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/rackmountnet/fsp50080bus.html They are long but you might be able to design a more compact build with one. Gives you more options, at least.

Try asking on mp3car.com because almost all of the members over there have experience with mITX setups and can give you some case ideas.
 
ahh I lost my old post....grrr

I just made up a case with gridpaper a few mins ago. It's probably the best way to go.

I decided to stick with ATX size psu cause of using a 1x 120mm fan setup. It would suck all the hot air up very efficiently.

I picked this mobo over the lv-673 because i wanted to go dual core. I dono why yet, but I think it'll be good.

Thanks for the 1U suggestion (i hadn't looked at that), but the long psu won't go with my case design. Let's just say i'm going to have 4 raided sata drives seperate completely from the rest of the pc, and I'll be using fans like a madman :p

The logic supply case you posted is near the size i'll be doing. It's about the same width, 45mm longer, and 60mm higher(cause i want room for a big heatsink).

I only have one question now: If the mobo is mounted on the bottom of the case, is there a weight limit on how much of a heatsink you can put on? I was looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106045
 
board clearance would be fine....i'd still have about 50mm...

i might scrap my idea for a self-made case...i just emailed commell and they're coming out with a mitx case that supports atx/eps power supplies. i'd expect it to be way better than one i could make. plus this would be a big step towards more powerful sff systems in the future...
 
Custom Shuttle-sized case with interchangeable boards and full-sized PSUs? Sounds like a plan!
