Mistake with HD 7750

Alright, so I made a mistake in purchasing the HD 7750. I was thinking about getting a HD 7850 instead and selling my "old' card to a friend for a decent price (what it should have been priced at to begin with).

My question is - would this be a good card to get? My current resolution is 1440x900 with my old 19" Samsung.

System specs are as follows:
Core i3 2100
8GB RAM
Samsung 830
Enermax 550 watt PSU

Note that I have a 7200rpm drive and an external DVD drive, so my PSU isn't really loaded with much.

Games are as follows:

Skyrim (with mods)
Oblivion (with mods)
Doom 3 (yep - still rocking this game!)
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Far Cry 2, Crysis 1
Halo 2 PC :)

My desire is to run my games on my monitor at native resolution (1440x900), and at a solid 60 fps, hopefully never dipping below that. Would the Radeon HD 7850 be enough, or should I go with a 7870? I don't want an Nvidia card, because the older ones at this price range seem to be power hogs compared.

Also, I still have an old Dell 17" Flat CRT that I might pull out to do some gaming with - as it really is a better screen than an LCD can ever hope to be. It can go up to 1600x1200. :)
EDIT: I also plan on running the games at their highest settings - sorry for not putting that in earlier.

Skyrim with mods might be a challenge even for 7850... Otherwise the card will sure serve you well...

Perhaps. All I know is that with the HD Texture Lite pack, my Radeon HD 7750 doesn't seem to perform any worse than it did without the mod. This is pretty much the only mod I plan on doing, for what it's worth. :)
 
at your resolution i wouldn't go any higher than the 7850 though i'm surprised the 7750 is having trouble since my roommate uses a 5670 at that resolution and pretty much maxes out all his games.

It's not having trouble, per se. I'm just a picky bastard and want a constant 60 fps. It runs games just fine, and is able to play everything that I throw at it. All the games I have right now are very playable. I just want that magic smoothness. :) Thanks for your replies.

a 5670 most certainly does not max out many newer games at 1440x900. a 7750 is twice as fast as the 5670 though so it should be doing fine at that low res.

Could be, and probably is, a CPU issue. Skyrim is very CPU bound. For whatever reason, they thought it a good idea to have the CPU rendering the shadows instead of the GPU.

This would actually make sense. I'll try to lower the resolution and see what happens with maximum shadows. Compared to Oblivion, Skyrim has some awfully blocky shadows. So I really should have gotten that Core i5 Quad Core at 3.1ghz... Oh well. :D

And I like how 1440x900 has become "low res" nowadays. Makes it possible for cheapies like me to keep their old monitors and not spend so much on their gaming rigs. :) Back when I was really into gaming hardware, the 9700pro days (still have my card), 1600x1200 was the holy grail of high resolution. My how times have changed!

Or lower shadows and see if performance magically goes up... That should be a clear indication of a CPU bottleneck.

You were correct. Overall - the performance definitely went up. It still dips down into the 30s, which is why I'll probably still consider a new video card.
