2 74GB Raptors in Raid0 ..and then mirror that with one 150GB Raptor...is that possible?

Mirror a Raid0 array?

With linux software raid yes. With some hardware raid yes. With motherboard raid probably not.
I would instead make a backup however since even this mirrored raid does not remove the need for a backup.

No, it is still the same performance as two drives in RAID0, only now the array would have additional read speeds thanks to the RAID0+1 or RAID10 portion of it. If anything, the performance would increase.
No, it wouldn't work like that.
His setup would be two 74Gb drives in RAID 0 mirrored onto a single 150Gb drive. His write speeds would be limited to the speed of the single drive since writes need to complete to both members of the mirror. Read speeds probably wouldn't increase in a setup like that either, if anything they'd decrease.
If you want to make use of those 3 drives, leave the 74Gbs in RAID0 and run backups to the single 150Gb.

With a smart raid controller read speeds can be better with this setup.
