Just a note for Optiplex 780 users

I understand under Core 2, chipset support is needed for Pass-through feature. The vague part is whether all processors support it when paired with proper chipset.

Optiplex 780 is on supported chipsets for pass-through. Previously I always thought you need top of the line C2Q 9xxx series or Xeon to enable every feature.

After running out of test equipments, I try ESXi on Optiplex 780 again with Q8400 and happy to report that Q8400 on Optiplex 780 Pass-through is available as seen in vSphere Client.

Yeah but does it actually work? I had trouble with Optiplex 960 with an E8400(?)

EDIT:

To clarify, I could passthrough stuff in the management interface, have the guest start up fine, have the device show up in the guest, have the driver load with no issues, and when time came to actually function it wouldn't. In my case it was a WiFi network card, it would do everything fine until you tried to connect to something or scan available networks.

Built-In 82567LM
Add-In BCM5721 Gigabit Network Card

1. Pass-through BCM5721 to test VM. No vmnic for test VM. Physical NIC inside VM shown as Broadcom NIC. Ping from vSphere Client to test VM. Status OK. Appears OK for particular gigabit network card.

2. Please note that the card involved is PCI-Express card.
3. For optiplex 780 in the case of PCI cards, according to info, two PCI slots are behind a PCI bridge. Per my basic understanding, pass-through is not allowed for PCI cards under such configuration (behind a PCI bridge). Where in doubt, please check with other forum members for more info.
