So, I'm real close to starting up my first rig...

so what scrypt mining tool should i use? cudaminer, sgminer, old version of cgminer?

looks like most folks use cgminer, no? is sgminer now just the same thing by a new dev?

thanks for any insight!

That depends on what graphics card you have.

If nvidia, cudaminer is only show in town.

If AMD, you'll want to use sgminer (imho). It is still actively developed. It is based on cgminer. But cgminer stopped supporting GPU mining a while back so if you used cgminer, you have to hunt down that older version which suffers from several bugs (crashing at exit, etc.). sgminer addresses those bugs and just generally works better. You'll also be grateful when you run cgwatcher on top of sgminer. cgwatcher is amazing in what it does for sgminer and cgminer (monitoring, managing, and providing a nice interface over everything).

For AMD cards, the big 3 for scrypt mining are cgminer 3.7.2 (the original), cgminer-kalroth (3.7.3) with some improvements to the original and sgminer 4.1 also taken from the original but with some of Kalroth's improvements as well. I've used all 3 and prefer cgminer-kalroth for the fine-tuning of xintensity and variable gpu-threads (not available in cgminer original). Everybody has their preference and only from playing with each one will you know for sure. It really depends on how much you want to tweak. Any one of them will get you mining but if you want to get the best hash/power ratio, you'll want to tweak the hell out of them. In this scenario, you may get better performance and/or stability from one over the other but from my experience it's not a huge difference. I was able to squeeze another 40 hash out of my cards by using kalroth over the original cgminer. Keep in mind that measly 40 hash took me hours to get stable.
 
so, i see reading Veox's posts that perhaps SGMiner doesnt work well in Win 8.

is this true/correct?

I use Windows 8.1 and while I don't use sgminer as my primary mining program, it worked fine when I did use it. There is little difference between Windows 7 and 8 at the core.
 
This is only my opinion, as everyone has their own preferences, but I usually like to stick to what the majority of everyone else is running, in this case, cgminer 3.7.2. This way, it is far more likely that someone will have working settings for your card without requiring you to change software and get used to the nuances of it as well. If you really want to squeeze every last KH/s out of your card, cgminer-kalroth 3.7.3 is the way to go though. However, you really have to have your tuning down to a science in order to do so... for new users, I usually recommend starting with the basics.... get to know basic cgminer 3.7.2 first, then graduate up from there.
