Is CPU only mining even worth doing in a VM? For instance a redhat VM with 40 CPU's at 2.1GHZ running under an ESXi host... would that be worth mining with at all or a complete waste of time and resources?

Probably not worth it. Mining with an 8-core/16-thread CPU (1800X), you can get maybe $2 or $3 a day on NiceHash (CryptoNight). With a 7700, even overclocked, it's like $1.50.

With a lesser CPU you would be talking about less than $1 each per day, I'm not sure that would even cover electricity.

Yea you're probably right. Shame.. I have all of these CPU's just doing jack shit... Ah well.

i make profit mining on abunch of cpus
x56** make a few extra bucks over electric
e5 26** make enough to pay for the chip in a few months
opteron 62** do pretty good as well
xeon phi 7250's are fantastic but ya cant find those :p

almost all of the above is mining under vmware.

Well, if you're not doing anything else, maybe try it. Even with $1/day each and 40 CPUs that would be a decent take. I just don't know about electricity where you're at.
