I've been looking at getting a new DVD player and have been flip-flopping back and forth between an upscaling, DVI, networked player and an HTPC. The downside to the DVD player is that it does not support Quarter Pixel in Divx (which I actually don't know whether I'd use or not), will not support as many codecs as an HTPC, and, pertaining to the topic of this thread, will not play WMV 9 HD. The only forseeable downside to the HTPC player is cost.
Now, I don't know if WMV9 HD support is that important, but if nothing else, it makes for one hell of a showcase item on a projector setup. It also just feels like something I'd want to be able to suport. Microsoft's page lists a DirectX 9 128 MB video card as the minimum supported for the 1080p stuff. Will a 9600 Pro suffice here or should I be using a 9700 or 9800 Pro? I'm asking because I have never tried these clips on anything less than a 9700 Pro, and that seemed to be adequate at the time. With newer clips such as the Alexander trailer, I don't know if even a 9700 Pro would be good enough.
So, if anyone has experience with this (or can download that specific clip and test it out) tell me what would be the minimum card I should buy? I'm trying to keep costs down, buy I will buy what I need to get the job done.
