Looking to build a budget rig to play and mod GTA5. What should I get at minimum to run and mod GTA5, and would would you guys recommend. I am on a pretty tight budget.

Resolution?

And the 750Ti is a good place to start looking, fantastic GPU for the price. Though I'm not sure on GTA5 performance

I have been looking at this eVGA gtx 670 4gb FTW I am throwing 16gb ram hoping FPS will be decent

Agreed with Broham.. A used 670 can be easily picked up on the forums for $90-$110, a 680 for $130-$160, 770 for $150-$180 and 780 cards for around $200.

Don't forget the AMD side too.. 7970 cards ranging from $110-$150 (higher price for ghz models), with the 280/280X cards going for similar prices. I have seen many a 290 going for well under $200 on the For Sale/For Trade forums too!

GTA5 is a pretty demanding game... At a minimum, I'd say grab a 290X in the very near future. If you can afford to wait, then save like a banshee and hope for a very hot Black Friday/Christmas deal on a Fury, FuryX, 980, or 980Ti. You will be bottlenecked by your CPU to a certain degree, especially if you end up getting a higher end GPU.

I am thinking like $200 or so on the GPU budget, with the last post is it even worth throwing $200 away to have an almost unplayable experience. After reading some of those reviews it looks like I need a $400 plus card to have a somewhat enjoyable time with this game?

with all eye candy cranked up and advanced features? Yes. for that game save for at least a used GTX 970. AMD GCN 1.0 cards perform very poorly so 7900/r9 280(X) are out of the equation.. so as DejaWiz said save for a 290X if you want to go to AMD side is kinda equal to the GTX 970 overall.

Have you watched YouTube videos with various cards at 1080p? They might not be totally representative of what you will exactly see on your own machine with that specific GPU, but it will be likely close. It will make it easier to narrow down your choices.

For $200 you can probably get an r9 290. Its not that much worse than a r9 290x but if you'd be willing to spend $20-30 more you can probably get a 290x. The 4GB of memory should help in GTA5.

I have a 670. This games runs 40-60fps, the low moments are in very grassy areas. I'd say 90% of the time its 60. My settings are way over the memory limit (only setting not maxed is Shadow and Extended Draw Distance), as my card is 2GB, but that doesn't appear to be an issue since performance is lovely and looks great.
I don't know what this would look like with a Phenom, but its fine on an overclocked 2600k.

You have to keep in mind most of the sites that benchmark games tend to use the absolute highest settings possible. You can get a big jump in performance by lowering them a bit without much of a drop in visual quality. Even my old GTX660 ran it pretty well (50-60FPS most of the time) at 1080p just by lowering a few settings. It still looked better than the console versions. :p

The Phenom II X6 might be a bit of a bottleneck, but GTA5 is one of the few games that can actually utilize 6-8 threads well, so it will probably be less of an issue than in most games. If you haven't already overclocked your CPU you could gain a decent amount of performance by doing that too.

If you want to play modded then you need a 970 Gtx. Buy a used one for 250.
Or get a new 290x for 250.

Thanks guys I think I will veer away from the AMD chip and look into a intel cpu/mb I really worry my framerate may suffer with the bottleneck, have not decided on GPU but I think I will hold off and save a bit more and get a higher middle of the pack card.

That's a solid plan if you want to get the most out of the in-game graphics settings.

If you're on a serious budget, Picking up a 770, 760, 280, 280x.. Etc. Would work wonderfully. I have player it with both a reference GTX 780 3gb, and my g1 gaming 970. The 970 certainly plays a little bit better especially at 1440p. But they both easily can achieve 60+ at 1080p on higher settings. It really depends on what you're looking to spend. For $200, a 780 or a 290 would definitely do well. For 120 or so, a 280 or 280x would be your best bet in my opinion.

750ti isn't terrible its playable but certainly not amazing.

I would get a 970 or 290 290x, if you can stretch the budget or find a used one.

It runs well @ 2560x1600 on my PC with most settings turned up. Very solid 60 fps with rare dips into the mid 50's.

LOL....A $200 card is not the minimum card if you are willing to play on "High"

I have two computers at work:

PC #1

2500k
32gb ram
GTX 580 $80 used

Runs on high (much less demanding than ultra) at great framerates at 1920x1080

PC #2

2600
8gb ram
2 x $26 eBay GTX 260s in SLI

Runs it on high at 1650x1050. 50-60fps.

If you want to play on Ultra with AA its a whole different ballgame. You definitely don't need a $400 card to enjoy the game (would that even be worth it?).

what are considered Great Framerates for you? sub 40s?.. didn't you read the part where he said he want to MOD GTA V. mod a game generally mean add textures, add effects, etc etc and that mean also a big performance hit (generally speaking). personally as other said GTX 970 would be the minimum choice to run that game at 1080P with as much settings cranked up as possible..

I ran GTAV at reasonable settings with an i3 4170 + R9-270x, i5 4670k + R9 270x, i5 4670k + GTX660 Ti.

If you don't have to have every setting absolutely maxed out you can get really nice framerates even with new cards in the $150-200 range, and if you get a used card you get even more performance for your dollar.

They did use a Core i7 5960X rather than a Phenom II of course, but in terms of GPUs you don't need a super high-end card for GTA5.
