I finally dusted this project off (been working on it for years) and completed it last weekend.

My goal was to have a minimalist MAME arcade cabinet (no floorspace, wallmount, no waste).

I did this by:

-using a LCD mounted mini-itx case (computer is 7"x7"x2" mouned behind the LCD)
-20" IPS LCD (best viewing angle and quality), also 4:3 aspect ratio (important for vintage games)
-2 person controls (a MUST)
-Fanless power supply, fanless CPU (dual core amd), fanless GPU (radeon 3100), and SSD (no moving parts). So it's silent, and uses less than 20watts)
-USB powered speakers (audio is via the same usb cable) this reduces cables and AC adapters!

Using Windows 7, hyperspin (very cool GUI front end), and 64bit Mame.

Looking to add a black/smoked plexiglass bezel over the LCD and speakers, as well as put some MAME/Arcade artwork on the border of the bezel.

it looks like it's mounted into the concrete walls? how are the controls, responsive?

Here are the specs:

-Mini Box M350 Fanless Mini Itx Case w/Pico 60w PSU ($75)

-ECS HDC-I2(1.0) AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core) AMD Hudson D1 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo ($55 after rebate)

-xArcade dual Arcade controller (usb)

-OCZ Vertex 30gb SSD ($35 used)

-Windows 7 64bit, Hyperspin Frontend GUI and mamepui 64bit.

-20" 4:3 (1600x1200) IPS LCD

-usb powered Creative Labs speakers

Made the minimalist cabinet out of MDF/plywood.

Made the mount out of water/gas pipe and fittings, spray painted it with black enamel.

I have that same motherboard and happen to have the same case with PSU on the way. I'm glad to see this configuration all works together well. :-D

Very nice work on your system!

The 20" 4:3 1600x1200 IPS screen looks like a great choice. I'd imagine something like that is hard to find?

How does the USB-powered audio sound?

this is awesome! im thinking about making a MAME machine that the screen folds into like a suitcase (or really large laptop?) since space is at a premium at my place. looks like the components you used would be a great start for that. any complaints at all? is the computing power plenty for that or would you at all recommend a slightly faster cpu/gpu/ram? i actually have the x-arcade page open right now, but im thinking about doing the do-it-yourself kit so i can place the controls how i want them. hows their setup? do you really need 8 buttons per player for any games? does MAME have any 4-player games? how many games are included in MAME64?

sorry for the massive barrage of questions. :D thanks in advance.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life however I just saw this and I wanted to know how this Mame box is still alive and kicking? I'm looking to do something similar to this but I want to hook it up to either of the HDTV's in the house via HDMI and also grab it and go if I need to go on business trips, etc..

Sadly I noticed that the same motherboard / cpu combo has been discontinued and I can only find the version with the fan.
