I've been wanting to put together a small, cheep(ish) file server after having almost lost my documents one to many times. My initial thoughts was to make something like the udat, but I feel that it would be hard to cut down on the noise level as well as more expensive when dealing with sff mobo's that had gigabit ethernet. My current plan is to either go with a small case that will fit a micro atx motherboard and has either 6 or more 3.5 inch bays or six or more 5.25 inch bays, and mount some 5in3 hotswap bays (always plan for expansion). The other idea is to give up on the smaller case and just go with something like this, but thats getting a bit too big for my tastes (although the price is right).

In summation:
lots of hd space
doesn't sound like a jet engine
not too huge (hoping for a micro atx setup, but that may not happen)
not too expensive (200+ bucks = too expensive)

I use a Buffalo Linkstation as my file server at home. I've been very happy with it. Small, cheap, and quiet.

Six bays, but the assembly at the bottom of the bays is removable, opening up 3 additional 5 1/4 bays if you need it, so you could have 3 5-in-3 or 4-in-3s, or 4 3-in-2s and an optical drive. Priced at 150 or 160.

edit: this is larger than what you are looking for I think. I'm don't know if what you want exists.

Yeah, I have the same fear. I had seen that case before, and if they just made something that was three bays smaller it would be great:(
