mini PCIe SSD noob

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum, but mods, please move as you wish.

My Lenovo T61p has a Intel Turbo Memory card I'm not using right now because I'm using Linux, so I was thinking of taking it out and putting something else in there.

The Intel Turbo Memory card fits in a mini-PCIe physical interface, so I was thinking of getting one of these SSDs to put in there.

But I'm confused as to the difference between the interfaces. Why are there differences between the PATA, SATA, mini-PCIe interfaces? How do I know which is the right one to use? Do these interfaces just determine how the OS communicates with the device? And from some snippets of things I've read, mini-PCIe seems to be a USB interface, can anybody confirm?

And anybody have suggestions for a filesystem to use?

And is Newegg the right place to look when it comes to selection? I remember a couple years ago their SSD section was pretty crappy.

From what I understand you cannot boot off of these with a T61p, nor would you want to. The majority of these are very slow 20-30mb/s and they really aren't cheap. Most of them are designed for Netbooks. It seems like a lot of the mini-PCIe SSD cards work as PATA drives.

The only use I have though of for these would to be if you bought a small SSD HD like an Intel X-25e 32GB, and wanted more storage space while keeping your DVD drive.
 
I was actually thinking about putting my swap space on there or maybe by non /home directories on there, probably /etc or /root. I guess if they're slow, putting /var or /lib on there isn't the best idea.
 
Yeah, I thought about that too, but most are slow. Random access is probably better then a mechanical HD though. Get 4GB of ram if you don't already have 4GB. You probably won't need much swap space then.
