I'm in the process of building my new Core i7 build. I'm having a little trouble getting the 8-pin CPU power cable to reach the plug when going behind the motherboard tray.

I really don't want to route it right on top of the motherboard in sight. I was thinking about getting an extension cable in order to reach it but I was thinking there must be an easier way.

I currently have the HX620 with the fan facing upwards. Basically the PSU is upside down. I read somewhere that you could mount the PSU with the fan facing downwards. The only thing is, there is no vent for air to intake. The PSU is standing on the rubber feet, but I still think that there isn't enough room to take air in.

What I want to know is, would it be safe to have the fan facing downwards? This way I would get an extra few inches to reach the plug. It's literally a few inches away. I've tried to route the cable all sorts of ways behind the tray and still doesn't reach.

If this doesn't work, I guess I'll just have to order the extension cable.
 
Yeah I have the same setup pretty much less the I7 part. I had mine fanside down/rightside up for a couple hours and I didnt notice alot of heat but in the end I just flipped it over and ran the 4pin across the mobo. Its not super clean but It doest kill myair flow. If its that big of a deal I would go the extenstion route.

I had a similar issue with my brother in laws computer (diff case though). I just got the extender as I wanted it to look clean and not worry about shorting out anytime soon due to cables getting frayed by fans. The connector was like 5 bucks, if it had been more I might have thought about saying F* it.

I've got the HX520 in a miniP180: PSU fan facing upwards, and CPU cable in front of the motherboard. I know a lot of people want their build to be 'clean', but in my case it's not that bad. The cable snakes around the PCIEx16 slot (held down by the locking bit) and then goes around the CPU cooler up to the plug. It can't move and it's away from fans.

gotcha, his PSU was in a mid tower and the only way to make it reach was to make it almost touch his graphic card fan which was exposed and is razor sharp. Your call either way I just would make sure that the PSU is keeping cool enough it doesn't overheat. You might try and take a look to see if you cant reverse the fan in the PSU so its drawing air in and shooting it out the back of the supply...

I would just go ahead and run the PSU with the fan facing the bottom of the case. The case was actually designed for this config. The 620HX is also very efficient and tolerant to heat, so it won't have any trouble with the slightly restricted flow.

Looks like I was wrong (not the first nor the last time). I thought the fan was sucking air up out of the PSU, not down into it. My mistake. Learned something else new today :D

Actually the case was really designed for Antec PSUs which have a 80mm fan who couldn't care less about orientation (check the NSK 3480 for example). Other PSUs with 120mm+ fans can be mounted either way obviously but if you start loading the PSU you will want good cooling and the clearance when facing downwards is somewhat limited.
