This is my mini project log, sort of a "whenever I do something" type a thing, all pictures are clickable for slightly larger versions. Any and all comments are welcomed, as long as they're constructive and/ or nice. I have no ambitions to be a professional photographer, so these pictures are not the greatest.





So this is what I started with, a bit of a rats nest if you ask me. The Ultra X-Connect PSU is horrible for wire management, so I picked up an Antec TrueBlue 480 off Anandtech and ordered some sleeving and other various nick-nacks from SVC.





This is what is getting sleeved.




My first crack at sleeving, not bad if I do say so myself. I did scorch the sleeving a bit with my heat gun, hence the bulges in the sleeve immediatly after the heat shrink.




My improvised ATX pin removal tools. When I placed my order, SVC was out of their PSU sleeving tool kit, so I just bought a male/ female pin remover, so I had to come up with something.

Post shrinking of the heat shrink. If I were to do this over, I'd make sure all the sleeving was lined up under the heatshrink, I think it looks a little sloppy.





I ran out of blue heatshrink, so I wiped out some black that I had laying around. Didn't turn out half bad in my opinion.




The hole I cut to allow the ATX connector to pass around the back of the motherboard. I ended up running several wires through it in the end.




This spot is still a problem, I may end up using a piece of mirrored plexi to hide all the switch, LED, and front USB wires.




(Sorry, its blurry) I think this looks better then what was there before, much cleaner.









(Disregard the messy room in the first pic. My computer room has become a bit of a trash bin as of late.) Some finished shots, I had originally planned to stick some UV CCFL's and a batch of UV LED's, but the inverters for my CCFL's died and my LED's haven't gotten here yet, so instead I just shoved two white CCFL's that I had laying around. The blue paint on the drive bay covers is pretty close to a mirror, I'm just too lazy to try to capture that on camera. I've got more plans for this case, but wont start on them for a couple days, have to get some more materials together.

Future plans include flipping the hard drives around so all that wiring is hidden, a little paint, and some LED's distributed in strategically placed points. I've got some other ideas, nothing major, but I wont have plans until later tonight.

Anywho, thoughts? Comments? Questions? Answers?

Good job sleeving!

I'm diggin' the painted front panel. Kinda curious how you painted your Nexus...care to share? Personally, I would've painted it white... I like white on black (hehe, I set that one up...) ;) But nonetheless, it looks great!!

The Nexus was easy to paint, just pop four screws out and the PCB and knobs pop right out and you're golden. I thought about white on black ( :p ), but all I had laying around was blue and clear coat, so that was that.

sigh, i wish i woulda seen this a week or so ago. i just got my x-connect and it is a little less workable than I would like, but I am too lazy to 1) send it back for a refund and 2) do all the sleeving you did :x

Yeah, the Ultra turned out to be horrible for wire managment, especially the ATX cable :( . Apperantly some people are stripping off all the sleeving and resleeving them to fit their needs, but that seems stuipd if you ask me, too much time and money spent on a low quality PSU.

Yes, yes he is. Have you checked out project redwood? Its incredible to say the least.

The sleeving was supposed to be white, but apperantly white is more translucent than anything else. I may end up redoing it with something slightly darker, but dont have the time at the moment.

Someone on another forum suggested I do this, and since I was thinking the same thing, I decided to go ahead and flip the hard drives.





I had to cut a small hole on the back of the drivecage to pass the wires through. I think it looks pretty good. I considered pulling the labels and polishing them, but they still have a couple years left on the warranty.






These are the two problem areas that I still need to work on. I've got some ideas, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.
