Is a external PSU possible with a mini ITX gaming build? Or is there a way to mod a powersupply so that it can be used externally

Always possible. Just sort of defeats the purpose. Think about what you are trying to accomplish... Most PSUs come with fairly long power connectors and you can buy extensions, but you would want to limit these, because of the amount of current passing through them.

Well it means more space inside the case for cooling and it can be split appart so easier for transporting. Wouldn't be too bad with a small case.

So do you mean just extension PSU cables and build a socket into the case?

pico PSU, no idea.

Just wondering if it's possible to save space on the inside of the case by having an external PSU

Doable sure, and with a modular one relatively easy to disconnect for transporting, but even so, why not just go for a mATX case at that point if you don't mind the extra total volume. Easier to carry one slightly larger item that you don't have reconnect every time, I'd say.

Or get something like Lan Gear's upcoming ITX case if you insist on a small case with a big cooler. But really, even something like SG07 is mighty fine for a gaming build, those low-profile coolers are actually pretty good. Games don't really need through-the-roof overclocking. Or you could always get a Corsair H50 which fits in the SG07 as well as some other cases. Much more convenient.

being as your asking about the PSU & the HSF I assume your talking about a Lian Li.. I have seen a couple builds using Pico PSU's which are basically a tiny board in the case & some wires with an external power brick. Another option thats kind of in the middle of the road is to make a new backplate for the PSU and make it for a SFX psu since there smaller & you can get em up to 450w so you can stick pack a decent graphics card. If it were me though I would find a better way to cool the CPU & keep the full PSU where it is.

What would be the best Cooler and Motherboard combination for the SG05,SG07 and PC-Q08?

Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 and either AXP-140 or Samuel 17 would be my pick.

Is this for the SG07?

Isn't DFI out of business or something?

Yes it's for the SG07. Back then it's about the only P55 mini-ITX you could have. I really like this combination even though new ones r no longer available since DFI's out of business.

well I already have a C12P and I can get a DFI board for $100AUD about 95USD. Looks to be the best combo so far.:)

Can you provide pics for the setup and what temps are you getting on both your gfx(model?) card and cpu(model?)?
