Trying to help my mom out with an upgrade. She wants a smaller machine that is quiet and puts off little heat. She does basic office stuff and rarely stresses out the dual core 2ghz amd with 1g of ram she has. I was looking at these parts for a mini ITX build.. gimmie some help!

Would've probably been better to put this in the Small Form Factor forum.

That aside, the build is basically ok, though the SG06, though a fine case, is even much, much larger than what you need for housing that system. Same for the PSU it has, since a system like that could even run with a 60W or so power source. Also I'm not sure it makes sense to pay premium for "better than basic" RAM for that kind of system, but that's just personal preference. Other than that, yeah, it'll work.

For less than $504 and more power wouldn't it just be easier to buy something like an HP Slim? Or other slim/small form factor pre-built?

But if your set on this build then tvih has some nice points.

I think I would go with a WD Green harddrive as well. And if your mom is like my mom im not sure there would be any point in over clocking it. Email and webbrowsing doesn't take that much processing power.

As Shane pointed out, you might even be better off with a pre-built system. The ASRock Ion 330 is a decent one with an optical drive, for example. It's only $360 @ NewEgg, and only needs an OS and external peripherals to run. It has only a 320GB HD and 2GB of RAM compared to your planned 500GB and 4GB, but for the uses you list it should suffice. And it's only 25% of the size of a SG06 case! More quiet, too.

If you want to build yourself but have a smaller case, there's options such as this though I've no idea on the quality of the PSU in it.

Dang, didnt realize there was a small form factor area.. my bad. I wasnt sure how big of a psu this thing needed with the Atom330 and ION? The smaller the case the better.

Are you set on building this with the Atom?

You could get an HP Slim w/E5300, 3GB RAM, 320GB HD and all the ports you need and warranty for like $370...just sayin, my mom has an older HP Slim and it's perfect for her.

Most Atom systems only draw 30W or so in use, at least when paired with a 2.5" HD and a slim optical drive (a bit more if using a 3.5" HDD). The ASRock Ion 330 system uses a 65W power adapter for example, which is plenty. For a small system with an optical drive the ASRock is what I'd suggest, unless you prefer the built-in WLAN of the Zotac.

What about a basic laptop? The Dell Inspiron 15 is $449, and WAY faster than an Atom rig.
