I'm looking for a cable that can take a mini displayport input and output to usb-c using the alternative dp over usb-c. Does this exist? Can I use the cable that takes usb-c input to dp output and just flip it?

This is very poorly worded but I will presume you have a host providing a DisplayPort signal and have a client which expects a USB-C connection (which it will switch to DisplayPort Alternate Mode). Such a device doesn't exist. A cable which connects a host providing a USB C signal to a client expecting a DisplayPort signal is a relatively straightforward device: you need an IC which tells the existing USB C host to switch to DP Alt Mode and done. But what you want requires a new USB C host because the USB C client needs to talk to something, Alt Mode is a negotiated protocol (part of Power Delivery, strange as it sounds). As such, this doesn't exist, there's just not enough demand in old host to new client -- because USB C only clients are extremely rare.

That's what I was afraid of but wanted to check, thank you. For context, I picked up a HP Elite X3 lapdock for cheap and was wondering if I could use it as an external display with my laptop that doesn't have a USB-C connector.
