Mini-Barebones - Performance?

I would just feel dirty owning a boxen that wasn't OC-ed :(

If your the nice and tidy type it be great.....

I'll save a few bucks and mount naked board on cardboard before I give up OC capability.

Also.... The PSU in that thing. What is it's rating. I'm trying to get rid of all my PSUs that are under 80+

Is all you would need for the shuttle is a CPU, Memory (2 x 1GB or maybe even 2 x 512MB), & a cheap CD Drive (using notfred's CD)?

How is cooling on these? Can you stick a Quad in one?

Cooling in a shuttle is very good. I used to fold with an OC P4 3.0 Prescott in one. The main issues with shuttles is their quality control, they always seem to have one or two quirks.

Pad mod a Q6600 and you have a 3.0 over clocked cooler running shuttle. At most you can get away with a very slightly higher VCORE and run dual SMP.

Low power cost, minimal heat and lots of points, hard combo to beat. Oh, they stack well too.;):D


 
So what is Pad mod? I was thinking I might pick up a couple of these and put a Q6600 in there with cheap RAM and a really cheap HDD or just go with a CD Drive. You could do the entire thing for under ~$600

And, on my headless boxen I don't bother with an optical drive, I just move it from box to box as needed so that's another 14 bucks.

Well, ordering it from Clubit would save me the 9.025% sales tax we have here in TN.

As fas ar the optical drive, kinda yes and no .. seems like your method would be a pain in the butt if you have to restart the farm..

If I just used a USB drive for boot, would save about $10 + ..easy install + backup .... as long as that chipset supported USB Booting

 
Just to re-confirm what I think... Going for 1GB (2 x 512) is gonna be my best bet correct?
I think 512 would not be enough .. plus I get dual channel performance.

2 Gig for sure for dual channel then in your config set the RAM to 512, works great;)

 
Instead of hardrive and CD-rom; why not go with a 5 or 10 dollar USB drive?

Put one of those Linux on it
 
Hmmm. I hadn't thought about the USB version of all of this. A full install of centos was only 4GB and you could create one "image" and then just copy it to a bunch of USB Drives and then just boot and let 'er rip.

Actually I wasn’t kidding. In the client config I preset max RAM to 512. Trust me, it does work great.

As to your previous thread about having to shut down………..unless there is a client change or a massive power outage I don’t shut down. I’m not running from a cd though, I do use hard drives.;)


 
My Micro ATX with ASUS P5E-VM HDMI reaches over 400FSB.
My E6600 for the first time ever is stable at 3.6Ghz allowing me to run 1:1 with the 800mhz DDR2
I also managed to fit a TRUE HSF with dual fans on it.

The 2nd picture in the gallery is my Micro ATX that is serving as my Home Theater PC as well.
