A team of researchers from the Technical University of Berlin claim to have developed a device that will reduce the number of distractions in your car when it senses high brain activity. So, what they are saying is that a bunch of distractions while you are driving is bad? Whodathunkit?

They were able to speed up driver's reactions by as much as 100 milliseconds. It might not sound much, but this is enough to reduce breaking distance by nearly 3 metres when travelling at 100 kilometres per hour, says team leader Klaus-Robert Müller.

PUT DOWN THE FING CELL PHONE..

should be a law but the money buys the politicians and we get fuk on insurance and dodging idiots.

They need to integrate bluetooth technology into this mind-sensing car, that and stick a mini-taser inside the cellphone as well, so you talk on it.. BZZZAT

Why make a technology so people can re-focus on driving? Why not make this technology disable the car, pull it over, and dispatch a tow truck... all while sending drivers license information into the DMV for revocation.

If you are so distracted as to need a system for this, then you shouldn't be driving.

I think this says it all.

While it sounds cool, I always take announcements like this with a huge grain of salt. How many times have we heard about great new technologies under development that for some reason or another never make it to market?

I don't know, the one where you're required to blow into a breathalyzer before the vehicle will start made it out into the wild. There were a bunch of idiots in the student center talking them being so drunk they couldn't drive so they had a sober friend do the test for them. Then they laughed about having to do 90 through town before their bikes shut down on them because they couldn't re-do the test.

But on this one, I like Ockie's idea better.

I don't know, sounds like a good idea in theory, but it could be a distraction in itself.Do we really want an electronic back seat driver in our cars?

Brillant!

I don't understand why people just can't focus on the responsibility of driving for the brief time they're behind the wheel of their cars. Our society is pathetic.

Someone needs to get the robot a keyboard with more than CTRL, V, and Enter keys.

Lol. I remembered the thread about the long lasting battery and thought to my self, that quote would be perfect for this story. :)
I just thought I pass on that "great" quote used more time than I can remember over the years.:D

Crucially, when brain activity rose above a predefined threshold, the brain-interface device was rigged up to switch off the secondary task – clicking the steering wheel buttons. Being freed from this task speeded up subjects' reactions times by an average of 100 milliseconds.

In a real-life situation, such a device might be programmed to switch off superfluous information systems when the drivers' brain is already over-loaded by other stimuli, such as a conversation with other passengers, says Müller.
