I'm new to this visualization stuff and thinking of giving VMware ESXi a go on my home server but not sure if it will run well.

Specs;
1.6 GHz AMD Athlon
512mb Ram
80 GB IDE hard drive or 250 GB sata drive

Currently I'm only running Cent OS 5.3 on there as a development web server.

Do you think my server would cope with 2-3 Cent OS VMs running together?

Thanks

No where near enough. Needs at least 2gb of ram, and a 64bit proc.

And you'd have to have a better HD controller.

It's an enterprise product :)

Keep in mind that your CPU needs to include the proper virtualization extensions necessary to run the hypervisor. I have a feeling that your 1.6Ghz AMD CPU is of the Athlon variety? If so, that won't work.

Spec your server like this: Think of how much memory, CPU, and storage EACH of your virtual machines would require. Your minimum hardware requirements for your server is that plus a little bit for the actual hypervisor.

So it would work, but not very well?

I think i'll just wait until i get some better hardware.

Thanks anyway

No, the requirements for ESXi are hard requirements - the vmkernel will not load without them.
