min. cpu for 7800GTX?

I'm building a new system with an Athlon64 3000+, 1gb ram, and an X800XL for now. I might upgrade soon to a 7800GTX. Will my CPU be a bottleneck?
 
depends on the game you are playing and the resolution/AA settings
 
not much of a bottleneck. If you OC not at all (at least compared to like a X2 or FX overclocked).
 
Well I have 3000+ and 6800GT and in some games I see that CPU is lagging. Well it might be enough for GPU but it isn't enough for overall prformance.

Considering that 7800 GTX is preforming almost indentical as 2x 6800GT in SLi it's min. requairements will be simular.

Friend of mine have had 3200+ with 6800GT Sli and it wasn't cutting it. 3500+ or 3800+ would do a job but 4000+ CPU or FX 53 or FX55 would be real partner.
He was also unhappy with poor multitasking of it and here are x2 CPU's not avaible jet (Holland :( ) so He went affter some compability isues with AMD mobo to ASUS Intel nForce SLi mobo and 775 PIV and DDR2 so HE is happy now.(happy camper)
HT gives Him what He needs (even gaming He has few programs running, nothing realy havey but still)
Like He has 8 Mb connection and has MSN open and burns a DVD and still He can play online.

Yeah I plan on gaming only at 1280x1024 since it's my LCD's native resolution..maybe a 7800GTX would be overkill? :D

probably, depends when you plan on upgrading again.
 
i have a 3500+ winnie o/c'd to 2600mhz and a 7800 gtx and 2 gigs ram .. i will be adding a second 7800gtv when they come down soon i hope .. my system runs great

at 1920x1200 with maxxed aa .. etc

yes, he will be able to run games at that resolution, but it is worth to spend the money on a 7800GTX when he can get himself a used 6800GT on the cheap that will suffice...

Get 2GB before you get the 7800GTX, IMO
 
Great article at firing squad on exactly this. Whatever you think of them. Pretty much kills the thread. Well, assuming your an Athlon64 head. Unless someone here has put in several hours benching both 512kb and 1 meg chips?

Check it out. They say 3500+ levels aren't too bad with graphies to prove it or decide for yourself. :)
