Migrate template to new datastore

heh... just convert it back to a VM, do the move, and then convert back to template.

That sounds like a lot of time and work. This is what i did.
Remove template from inventory
Browse datastore and "move to" new data store
Browse the datastore where the template was moved to
right click the .vmtx file and select add to inventory
follow the wizard to select the host you want it added to.
I would of just cloned the template to the new datastore then deleted the "old" template off the "old" datastore. Quickest, simplest, and easiest way.
I would try and avoid using the datastore browser for, well, anything other than browsing the file structure and basic use such as adding VM's to inventory.

I never use the datastore browser for much of anything except uploading/download ISO's.

A lot of time and work? I think you're missing something or I am with what you did that could have possibly been better? You just right click, point to template, and convert back to virtual machine. It does it IN PLACE and takes a few clicks through the wizard.. that is what.. 15 seconds? Then do you migration, then right click > template > convert to template which happens instantly.
Obviously, if I meant you needed to roll out a new VM that you'd convert into a template later... that WOULD be a lot of work. I'm going to assume that is what you thought I meant. What you did took way more work..
