I have a GTX 260c216 at 655/2100 (Stock MSI) Boot up F@H, starts folding, and it's making a high pitched noise or whine when I am folding. Any remedy?

Antec Earthwatts 650 PSU. Sound seems to have diminished somehow, but still.
 
Unfortunately it seems to be a common problem with the gtx 200 series cards. I believe it is the Capacitors being stressed. Someone more in the know will no doubt be by shortly to go into more detail... Anyway, Welcome to the [H]orde! Hope this doesn't drive you away!
 
Sounds like capacitors whining at load; it happens.
I would RMA the card myself if I were you. It's not necessarily a sign the card is going bad, but I'd definitely RMA it and follow the 'better safe than sorry' mentality. :)
 
I had the same problem with my EVGA Gtx 260s...in fact I could even hear it through my audio outputs...but after folding about 1000 units on them, the whine went away.
 
On the 260's and the 270's, from what Ive heard, they have this whine noise.... but as newxperiment said, the more you fold, it goes away.
 
Just coil whine. Annoying, but not harmful. And there's really nothing you can do about it other than hope it goes away eventually.

Capacitors whine when they fail, not under normal load. If you've got whining capacitors, then you've really got something to worry about. But thankfully, that's almost certainly not the case here.

You can fold the card to the point it won't whine anymore. (+1 for used cards :D)

Nothing harmful, everything is fine. Buy a nice set of headphones? :confused:

 
It seems to have started going away. I set a passkey and stuffs. What else should I do to become uhh more part of the team?

And should I use my CPU as well? Or just stick with the GPU? I'm using a Q9550 @ 3.4ghz and 4GB.

With a few extra steps you can set up a 4 thread VM using VM Player 3.0 beta. (this is what I use)
 
And another thing, going to hardfolding.com I don't know how to get my Stats ID # to register for the site.

EDIT: I think I got it. Folded like 3 units for Tomshardware a while ago apparently lol.

Oh wow what an odd day to return to [H]. Happens to be my 3rd year here to the day lol. Nov9 :D
