With NVidia releasing the GTX650 (and in a rarity, it's a hard launch - Newegg and even MicroCenter have product today), how does it compare with the AMD midrange product, the HD7770, in terms of performance?

The two are in the same price range, both have identical power requirements (a single 6-pin PCI-E PSU feed), and even have the same RAM loadouts and system GPU bus size (both sport a 128-bit GPU/memory bus and 1GB GDDR5). Right now, the GTX650 is actually slightly *cheaper* at MicroCenter vs. the HD7770.

I know. Ive been trying to switch back to Nvidia actually from the amd 5770 I run now. I just like nvidias drivers better. I like the GTX 650 but, its about $20-$30 overpriced at the moment. Now, this makes sense of course since it was just released but still...

The AMD 7770 can be had for basically the same price the GTX 650 is at but destroys it in the performance category. Made me sad. : /

I dont know what Nvidia is going to do in this area, but they need a card that is on par with the 7770 in the $100 range... In fact, ive seen a few 7770's on sale with rebates for cheaper than what some GTX 650's are at. The only reason to get the GTX 650 would be someone in my case who just wants Nvidia over AMD and might be willing to sacrifice quite a bit of performance to do so(which im not willing to do). Hard sale.
 
The GTX (lol at the X) 650 is just their low-end mobile chip (gt 640), stuck on a desktop PCB. Somebody (I think [H]?) mentioned that it didn't *need* the 6-pin power connector but NV included it for overclocking purposes. I'm fairly surprised NV didn't release it 3 months ago.

People tried to wrangle the OEM model out of Dell a while back 3 months ago in June, but the reps wouldn't sell them one (for "replacement") unless they had a valid service tag referring to a machine that shipped with one. I couldn't spot one for resale (apparently a few were on eBay at one point) so I gave up and got the GT 640, which worked out fine.

I know. Its a fairly impressive card if you look at benchmarks. For how little power it consums it still performans fairly close to the GTX 550ti and 5770/6770. Its only like less than 10% slower. Its just priced too high right now. I like the card though. Unfortunately, with the 7770 being basically the same price, theres no reason atm to buy the GTX 650.
 
10% slower than last-gen's bottom of the barrel cards... sums it up about right XD.

But seriously, at ~$90 the card would be a great value proposition with low heat and energy consumption, capable of running DX11 titles etc. Hell, with some luck somebody will release a single-slot no extra power connector version that would be so ideal for HTPC. It is just way overpriced compared to existing competition.
 
I don't understand how the gtx650 is a lower end or should I say entry level card. its strange because looking at the specifications: it has 384 Cuda Cores!!! and with a 2gb version it seems that it would be a pretty powerful card. I know its only 128bit so its pretty memory bottle-necked but it seems to me like it should perform a lot better than it does.

Those cores are less efficient than the ones introduced in the Fermi generation, so don't expect GTX 560 Ti level of performance. Also, the core count for the GTX 660 is 2.5 times higher than the 650, which is why there's such a massive performance gap.

They should really introduce a part with cut-down GK106 to cover that massive gap! Perhaps a 650 Ti?
