Midrange PCI-e advice...

Looking for a little advice here… it is amazing how much the landscape changed on video cards in a couple years. I’m going to be building a new personal rig in the next few weeks and starting to do my homework on video cards. Plan to go with an nforce4 chipset 939 A64 board, so that means the jump to PCI-e. My old ti4200 is what I’m making a jump from. I do Win32 and Linux, so I’m leaning towards Nvidia unless things have changed. If possible, I’m looking in the $200-250 range – don’t have $1200 for a top end SLI setup these days.

Anyhow, the 6600GT workable as a mid range graphics card? I’ve looked around for SLI reviews using the 6600, but they seem more focused on the faster cards once you start talking SLI. I’d be going single card for a good while anyhow, and not totally sold on SLI anyhow.

Currently running a pair of 21” Hitachi 814’s when working, and flip to one when playing.
 
6600GT is an amazing card for the money. As for Linux, considering you obviously won't be gaming you could go to ATI and have no loss in desktop performance, but I will admit that nVidia's linux drivers are significantly easier to work with.
 
6600GT would be perfect, especially since you are running linux also.
 
I bought my 6800 Ultra over the X800XT:pE mainly because of the terrible Linux support from ATi, so if I do want to dual-boot this box (which I did when I first had it running), runnin X wasn't a royal PITA.

Personally, I think in your price range and needs, the 6600GT is the perfect match.

holy crap. you are just like me. No, seriously, this is unatrually similar...

- Ordered a nforce 4 board (msi k8n neo4 plat.)
- Use Win32 and linux
- ordering an athlon 64 3000+ winch. tonight
- just bought a BFG 6600 GT OC PCIe card off ebay for $223

The one I bought is this one. But if you were looking to spend less, I was going to go with an eVGA 6600GT
