Midrange card for WoW?

I agree, just get the low profile HD4650 for $41 AR. Why waste more on a $150 system. It will let him enjoy WOW at nice enough settings and he can keep cost to a minimal.

I can't seem to find any power supply requirements for this card ... will the 250W be enough to power it, along with the other components?

Remember, make sure you get what you want for WoW, you're gonna be staring at that screen 10+ hours a day for the rest of your life, so might as well treat your eyes a little. :)

My 3870 could max WoW at 1680x1050 cept for shadows. My 4870 added maybe 4 fps with medium shadows.

Going Pentium 4 --> i7 920 added 15 fps.
Going i7 920 @ 2.66ghz --> i7 920 @ 3.4ghz added 10 fps.

This game needs clock speed more than anything. I'm now at ~35-40 fps in Dalaran all maxed shadows at medium. Supposedly patch 3.2 is going to fix the coding on the shaders and make it run a lot better.

hahaha, funny and true. For wow, I would just get that 9600 for $55 everyone seems to be linking. If he only paid $150 for the whole system, I think $100 for just the gpu is overkill. Plus most more powerful cards might not run on 250w psu

Definitely not true. HUGE variance in video cards according to XBIT's review, anyway. Going with a 9600GT is definitely not the greatest move, when large framerate increases (at 16xAF, anyway) can be had with a not-too-colossal cost of going to a 9800GT or 250 GTS instead... from the looks of it, a GTS 250 is a smart buy for one that mostly just plays WoW...

Wow thanks for the link. I have been searching for something like for the past week.

WoW is waaaaay more CPU dependant than GPU dependant. I upgraded from a 6600GT to a 260 core 216 and only saw a 2 or 3 fps increase. However when I went from an Athlon 3500 to a Phenom II 810 I saw about a 25- 50 fps increase (depending on where I was). Plus I was able to max out my video settings. Just some food for thought.
