Microstutter at anything below 120hz

Hey guys first post and i need your help.

I have been getting what seems to be some kind of v sync microstuttering/frame skipping on some games. BFBC2, all Cods.. but not all.

here is a video of it happening

If i put my refresh rate at 120hz the ms/frame skipping goes away almost completely and the lower you go below 120hz, the worse it gets.

i prefer to play at 60hz because i use HDMI but the frame skipping makes it unplayable.

I had the same exact problem with BF3 but somehow using a frame limiter to 59.95 fixed that for me but it wont fix the others. I never had this problem about 2 years ago on the same cards. i've had to put up with it for that long as i only discovered 120hz makes it better.

can anyone help me out? thanks.

If it goes away at 120hz, it is almost for sure a v-sync caused problem. Have you tried turning off vsync on 60hz just to see if it still happens? The fact that you used a frame limiter that essentially stopped your system from ever using v-sync and it fixed the problem just makes it seem more likely that it is a v-sync problem. The reason the problem is probably going away when you switch to 120hz is, again, because it is likely you are never or rarely getting a high enough framerate that your gpu is actually using the v-sync. Are you using radeon pro? Are you gaming on a TV? Do you need the sound from hdmi or something? Have you tried the new amd beta drivers?

Disabling crossfire still makes it happen.

i Just tried turning off vsync and on call of duty the microstutter is gone !

tried bad company 2 and the stutter is still there a little bit but alot less then it was. (maybe crossfire related) i am not using radeon pro i use a program called bandicam (like fraps) to limit the fps. i am on a acer GD245HQ. Yes i need sound from the hdmi and i also find it smoother to look at.

However, crysis 2 still microstutters like mad with or without v sync. UPDATE - if i disable v sync in game and then turn on the fps limiter from bandicam the microstutter goes away but still has screen tearing. when i enabled v sync in game it comes back.

i am using 13.4 as they give me the best benchmark score.

any idea whats up with this v sync?

Benchmark scores don't mean shit, they are synthetic.

Try the new drivers:

new drivers make no difference :(

This does NOT happen in single player on BFBC2 but it does happen in COD MW2 single player...

Did a bit more testing on bad company 2 with this problem and i entered a game with vsync off and using radeonpro's dynamic vsync.

All was well for about 5 seconds and then i notice the frame skipping slowly starts creeping back from light to heavy. I alt+esc to desktop then went back to the game only to find the frame skipping gone again, but then slowly crept back like before. this also happends if i toggle vsync on to off, stops at first then gradually gets worse over about 10 seconds.

loaded a game up without radeon pro no vsync 60hz...frame skipping the same as when vsync is enable.

Just looking at it, that's one of those instances that is usually fixed with an FPS limiter. You might try different values in RadeonPro or you could try one of the other limiters like Afterburner. Rather than 59.95, try 60, or 61.

well thats the thing. it does fix some games using an FPS limiter. but some engines just seem to be stubborn. tried all kinds of numbers to limit, all ending in the same stutter.

im completely out of options and stumped by this despite all the hours of searching the web and my own testing.

Do a clean install of your drivers and test default setting. Try different crossfire methods (afr/afr2/sfr) try with/without hyperthreading if intel. Try triple buffering and 0 max prerendered frames.

Yeah i did an upgrade of my mobo cpu and ram about 10 months ago so had to reinstall windows and it still happend before and after.

I'll give those options a shot but im not sure how you try different crossfire methods? and how to set 0 max prerendered frames? i know you can do that in game options sometimes. is there some sort of program that does this?

Thanks.

Do your cards have a little switch on them? That switched the BIOS to a read only safe one, try that if they do.

Really? What exact model of 6950 are they?

Also can you try putting the GPU in a different PCI-e slot.

Do you have more than one monitor plugged in? Sometimes it'll incorrectly detect the refresh rate with two plugged in. If so unplug the second one. Try setting up RP like this.
