Microsoft Touch Mouse Explodes

I actually jumped out of my chair and took cover.

I received a brand new MS Touch Mouse (to test with Windows 8 on my laptop) yesterday 10/23. At around 8pm I ended up pairing it with my desktop to play around with it.

This evening (10/24) at approximately 8:30pm my daughter got hold of the mouse and started pushing it around my desk. I turned it over and took off the power and let her continue. She never dropped it, hit it hard, or fumbled with it. She could barely reach it and just pushed it a few times.

Five minutes later I heard a popping sound and then a sizzle. I expected flames and jumped out of my chair away from the mouse. Luckily no flames but it was very hot to touch. I waited about 15mins to let it cool and popped off battery cover. Sure enough the batteries that came with the mouse exploded. Thankfully my daughter had already moved on to something else.

Has anyone had this experience with this mouse?

Probably more like "defective batteries explode." I'm not saying it wasn't the mouse, but the batteries are a much more likely culprit.

Agreed! After posting I realized my title might be a bit misleading with the information I posted. My apologies for misleading anyone expecting to see the fiery death of a new Microsoft Touch Mouse.
 
What I found off when I set it up yesterday was both positive leads for the batteries were pointing in the same direction. Typically you see the opposite. I installed them as indicated anyway. I already requested an RMA but will try new batteries and see what happens.
 
Yeah, it's looks like it was the batteries, I've have them explode in something before and it scare the living shit out me, sounded like a .38 going off.

I have the mouse, got it in December last year, the original Durcells like the ones you have ran out or me a few months ago. I really wasn't digging the mouse in Windows 7 that much and first Windows 8 drivers left me cold as well.

But I tired it again with the new drivers that came out last Friday and they have made a pretty big difference. The mouse is overall greatly improved in terms of reposiveness and the momentum scrolling is great, momentum mice I think make a BIG difference in Windows 8, especially the Start Screen.

It's not perfect, there are apps, both desktop and Metro that don't work great with the scrolling, there is an option for at least desktop apps to assign then in a list to make them more scroll friendly with the mouse. But I've been using it every day on my dual screen desktop and I'm pretty happy with it for desktop use. It's not a gaming mouse by any stretch though, so if you game you may not want this mouse or have another mouse for gaming.

And yes, the batteries do go in the same orientation, that does seem odd but that is correct.

RMA that damn battery! You should send that story and pictures to them, make them feel bad they almost hurt your daughter.
 
LOL! They must have had a bad batch, I literally JUST got off the phone with a customer trying to explain their mouse "blew up", I didn't even know what to say really other than bringing it into our office.
