Microsoft Surface Prices Revealed?

At $799, still going to be a hard sell against cheap laptops for the average consumers.

So sure, machines made of 100% cheap plastic that are twice as heavy, with half the battery life, 1368x768 TN screen, slower with tack pads what don't work. Versus a machine could be used to literally hammer these things into pieces. That can also be used as a touch screen tablet with a digital pen.

Cheap PCs are great to have, don't get me wrong, but it's nice to see Windows on something that not cheap plastic crap.

800 dollars for Pro is a damn good price given its hardware and the software capabilities. I would have no qualms shoveling out even more for the 128GB of storage.

$800. Okay now that got my attention. That's incredibly cheap for a productivity tablet. Hope we don't get raped by customs when it gets here.

800 for pro is a steal, I was expecting 1000. I will definitely be picking one up.

800 bucks yes please the tech in this makes the Ipad look like a vtech kids toy. I had a ipad it didn't do everything i needed a full function computer like these is a instant deal for me.

As long as the keyboard/cover is included for $799 I'm sold.
I have been long looking at the Asus Transformer Prime, with the keyboard dock and thats over $700 for the 64GB.
I believe I saw 64GB and 128GB versions of the Pro, if thats the pricing for the 64GB sign me up (and maybe the 128GB wont be a huge price leap)

no ones mentioned this, but im wondering if to get this thing this thin and light if theyre using a proprietary/soldered ssd like apple. would be funny since everyone HATES that theyve done that on the mbpr, but im willing to bet at least 2 of the ram/ssd/battery/display are not user replaceable and no ones even mentioned it. :p but yeah im guessing it will be at least difficult if not impossible to upgrade the ssd yourself which means they will charge a bit more (not as much as apple obviously, but more than retail) to upgrade the storage. i would say $100 more for $64GB more might be about right.

IT'S A TABLET why would those be upgradable? the MBP is a laptop. apples .. oranges anyone?

I don't think people expect to be able to upgrade a tablet. It's not the same as a laptop at all.

People could easily upgrade HDDs and ram in laptops for over a decade. No one has ever been able to unscrew a small cover plate and do so in a tablet to my knowledge.

If the Pro 64 GB is $800 then I'm thinking the 128 GB would be $900. Honestly that's a fairly incredible price especially with the touch cover and pen. I just don't think that's going to happen. For one, Microsoft's partners would be forced to undercut them on their devices like this, and a lot of those were shown at Computex by Asus and Acer.

If the Pro is priced at $799, I imagine it could be a wild success. However the basic Surface with RT better be priced more like $399 to compete against the current and future iPad.

Certain x86 tablets have been user upgradable or at lest upgradable via loss of warranty but yeah, pretty odd argument to be making on a device that's obviously not user serviceable. But the fact that you can package a x86 computer with a ventilation system in something that's thinner than a Kindle Fire and only 4mm thicker then the new iPad. x86 tablet designs are getting very impressive.

Is Microsoft trying to become Apple? I mean, aside from pushing tablets... They're steadfastly ignoring the majority of people who detest Windows 8, and are telling us that we'll like it anyway. Now they're pricing tablets out of the competition.

One problem, Microsoft... you aren't Apple. You don't have the same raving lunatics who'll buy your stuff no matter what (AKA Apple fanatics). You don't have the same fanbase, and you certainly don't have the same charisma. Steve Ballmer is a utter douche and nothing MS puts out(or doesn't put out) will change that.

In short, you'll fail.

Exactly right. This is going to suck faster than a Windows phone that can't be given away.

Oh Steve, fanning the flames of the Apple hate train I see again.

Well actually he was slamming a $900 price tag on a device that's actually pretty much very well price at that point for what it is. Everyone outside of iPad owners think that a tablet should cost $200 and the results tend to be, well nothing like the Surface Pro.

And he needed to use the term "iTards" to do that with a nice broad stroked brush?

but its got a keyboard and full windows OS. and its really not that much thinner than a mbpr which has a discrete gpu and a separate hinged screen which of course takes up more room. im not saying the surface should be user upgradeable at all. i just fail to see why packing an absurd amount of stuff into a tiny tablet and locking it down is ok, but packing an absurd amount of stuff into a tiny laptop and locking it down isnt. i think that both of these devices SHOULD be made how they are, because they are more about form than about being cheap and easy to upgrade. i just found it funny that everyone was so outraged about it in the mbpr.

anyway its really looking like i will be getting one of these. i like apples products (hate the company) but never bought anything except an ipod classic and a used iphone because theyre just too expensive even for how nice they are. the surface pro looks like an amazing bargain if it really is all that for only $800. i too am wondering what the partners are going to do to make their win8 tabs competitive. they will REALLY be forced to innovate this time, which can only be good for the consumer. i hope we have a plethora of dockable/convertible/whatever win8 tablets by the end of the year. or maybe 1Q13 is more realistic.

A MBPR weighs about 4.5 lbs, the Surface Pro 2 lbs. The MBPR is 4.5mm thicker then the Surface Pro. The Surface Pro is 4mm than the new iPad. The Surface Pro is bleeding edge x86 tablet design and unlike the a lot of MacBooks can't skimp on cooling because it's designed to be held on the back.

Comparing the two designs is kind of pointless. The thickness, weight and cooling constraints on the Surface are much tougher than the MBPR. In those regards the Surface Pro has much more in common with the iPad.

I really doubt the construction quality is going to be any different. The only reason the battery life will be any good is because there's no hard drive. It's going to have 32 GB of flash memory. Of course that's going to give it good battery life, but at the cost of storage. The screen of the cheaper model is going to be 1280 x 720.

With all the layoffs happening lately, how could the economy be recovering enough for people to go out and buy these things? There's a reason why the Kindle is doing well, cause it's cheap.

People who have money are getting an iPad, and people who don't will either get the kindle or a laptop.

Economy my ass. the "economy" has seen 3 ipads and they have done just fine nevermind all the other tablets. people buy what they want to buy and find a way somehow. i know people that are ass broke but somehow ALWAYS have the latest toys. If it is good it will sell , MBP is a laptop get over it. it had replacable parts now it doesn't. better buy that applecare.

Well I was talking about the Surface Pro. And you're can't honestly compare those two cheap laptops with these Surface devices in terms of construction quality. A solid magnesium molded body to screwed together plastic parts?

Well people who have the money haven't had an option to buy Windows 8 devices before. And even people without a lot of money like to have a few nice things, a device like a Surface Pro can give them the best of both worlds in a price equal to or less than two separate devices.

But again, Microsoft isn't trying to sell tons of these things. Surface is mainly a nudge to partners and way to draw attention to Windows 8 and to give it an identity that Windows has never had before.

microsoft's tablet advantage will be the x86 architecture

nothing else will match it...there will not only be Ivy Brige tablets, but also Intel Atom ones, which even though they are low end, will still outperform the ARM competition, but when docked will give the user a *real* and *useful* OS, something that Apple or Android can't match...

I'm not MS lover, but their Win8 strategy on the tablet will pan out in the end, even if it gets off to a rocky start...

now give me a fucking x86 windows 8 running phone that docks into a full desktop OS and TAKE MY MONEY!

Those prices are highly unlikely i5 vs tegra 3 and only 200 difference looks more like they are just guessing. I would believe the tegra 3 to be more like 399 or 449, if not microsoft probably priced them selves out so they don't compete with other manufacturer.

People keep saying $599 and $799, but read the article again.
...at least above US$799, while the Windows RT-based model, featuring Nvidia's Tegra 3, will be priced above US$599
So it's going to be over $799 and $599.

So it's going to be over $799 and $599.

i think people are assuming that means those are base model prices and theyll go up from there. i could definitely see the pro being more than $800.

With Intel pushing x86 on phones you'd have to think that Microsoft and Intel are working on it and that it's not probably far off. However Windows 8 is in theory not optimized for devices smaller than 7" though the screen resolution is there.

A good business model would be to sell hardware at cost price, then make profit of OS & software licences. Make new hardware every year or so. Sell new OS licence on it.

So what does at least above $799 and $599 mean? $800 and $600? $2000 and $1000?

i think people are assuming that means those are base model prices and theyll go up from there.

I think that's the most logical way to read such vague language.

I think microsoft is pricing the RT model way too high, it might make sense if they don't want to piss of the oem manufacturers. Still way to high for a tegra 3 based model if that indeed is true. Given that tegra 4 will be around the corner after the tablet launches.

If the pro is "only" going to be $200 more than the RT why even bother releasing the RT? MS should focus on the Pro and market it as the first serious replacement tablet device while at the same time mocking the ipad as a children's toy.

They won't be able to compete against Apple in this market segment if they do that.
They need to release a lower-cost model in order to gain market share from those who are not in the prosumer market.

Then get sued by planet Earth if Microsoft sold these devices at cost plus a Windows license fee. People can say all they want about how slow and plodding and stupid Microsoft is, them getting into making PC has got to be making every computer device maker from Apple to HP to Google and everyone in between at least a wee bit nervous I'd bet anything that there's teams of lawyers and other looking at this situation VERY closely. Remember, Microsoft is selling this device for now only in their stores and online store. It's not going into general retail. Also notice that their Pro version is coming out after Christmas it looks like.

Microsoft has it's hands tied. I'm sure they'd love to sell these things as cost plus a license fee, they'd own the tablet business in a month. But like I said, they'd get sued buy the whole planet.

The problem with that is that other OEMs won't be able to sufficiently compete. There's no way for them to subsidize costs on there,

I had not heard about these not going into retail. That is a major mistake. One of the biggest strengths apple has is that they force retailers to set aside space where they can show case and spread out their products. If you cant use this in stores you are going to have one hell of a time selling it. MS needs to stop worrying about their OEMs and start worring about the long term sustainability of the company. The oems already dont give a rip about MS, half of them sell chromebooks, those that make phones sell android, they have no loyalty at all. MS needs to make a show case good priced product and tell the OEMs, see this is how you do it.

Some of you people are crazy.

I can barely stand the thought of Windows taking up space on my desktop's disk, and you're talking about putting it on your phones and tablets and every other device too? And here's our chance to break free from the chains of the monopoly on consumer computing and you want to bring that craziness into your other electronic devices as well? WTF, over.

Tablets are for leisure and entertainment, not work. I would never want to do "real" and "useful" work on a tablet unless I was in one hell of a bind. Unless my "job" was no more difficult than flipping switches by pressing buttons, I would be in tears within no time.

Seriously... who are you people? You people who want MOAR Windows in your lives? And how do you live with yourselves? Or are these comments not even real, but merely Stuxnet run amok? And why am I going to have nightmares tonight?

Do you mean like they got sued over the XBox?
Or, like Apple got sued over MacOS?
