Microsoft Surface for Windows RT for $199?

I am curious if we can get ICS running on that tablet. Those specs for that price would be nice. But I will believe it when I see it.

At $199 it is a gamer changer without question. And I don't mean that in a totally positive way as it would obviously hurt OEMS and Microsoft would have a rough time making any money on it. It would probably even further hurt the sales of x86 PCs. But it would present Apple and Google with a hell of foe. Android would be all but done except on devices at Big Lots and I don't see how Apple could continue to sell $500 iPads at ever increasing numbers.

The thing is though that this price seems to be coming from several people that all went to the same conference at the end of July, an official Microsoft event. So whether this is true or not it seems that it's Microsoft that's at the root of it, and that's why at least with what I know now it's hard for me to totally discredit it as impossible as it seems it has to be.

But $299. that's still extremely competitive and still makes >$200 Android devices much less viable and puts pressure on Apple as well. But here's the thing. There are other people making RT devices and there's a possibility that someone is making a pretty cheap one. I do think that RT devices are going to be very competitive pricewise and not try to go head on with the iPad, I think they'll be cheaper. You'd have to think that Microsoft and OEMs are going to stupid or brave enough to try to go toe to toe with the iPad on price, not right now.

Windows Phone 7 has been on the market almost 2 years, and its market share is truly insignificant. If anyone wanted a Windows based mobile device with a Metro-type interface, they'd have one, and yet the market share of WP7 appears to be in the low single digits... 1.3% of new smart phone sales in Q2 2012, according to Nielsen. What makes you think that somehow people are going to suddenly rush to Windows RT over Android now? People don't like Metro... if they did, they'd buy Windows phones.

theres no way id buy a windows rt tablet for the same price as I could get a nexus 7, the rt tablet is dead in the water imho. the pro looks good but will be overpriced probably :(

The $199 is almost unbelievable for a device that seems to look as good as the Surface does. I like Windows Phone, but there's never been anything near incredible about it. $199 for a Surface RT is nothing short of incredible, indeed it's almost unbelievable.

$199 will never happen. OEMs won't allow it. Stop snorting the fairy dust.

Except the OEMs they are going against at that price don't use MS products they use Android ... If MS wants to go nuclear on Google, this would be an extremely effective way to do so ... the x86 version is where MS has to be very careful not to tread on their OEM partners toes ;)

The overall market share isn't that large yet, but WP7 is showing massive growth numbers.

WP7 hit 450% growth, year-over-year at the end of Q4 2011, and I expect an even larger year-over-year figure for Q4 2012.

That basically makes WP7 the fastest-growing mobile OS out there, while iOS and Android slowly claw their way upwards and BlackberryOS falls like a rock.

It is therefore not unlike the weed, which grows quickly, but rarely ever amounts to anything of value.

i saw this thing like a month or two ago on the web, insanely cute, do want, i'll easily go $399 for it.

Plenty of people make the same charge against tablets and in particular the iPad. Growing rapidly but of little productive value. At any rate, what value something has is irrelevant from the standpoint of a profitable business if people are buying it.

It's almost like you don't understand how MS makes 99% of their money. Hint: OEMs. Well, also Google paying licensing fees per every Android device sold, but still.

Releasing 1 or 2 variants of Surface a year won't change that. Well, also Google paying licensing fees per every Android device sold, but still.

I just got a Samsung Foucs Flash to test out - I have to say I really really like it...as much android phones as I have had... Surface RT is all about convergence...it is tied to the success of Windows 8.

You're kidding, right? WP7 wasn't even launched until q4 2010 had already started... if it couldn't surpass the q4 2010 numbers it'd be an unbelievable failure. Also note that your link shows MS losing almost half their market share overall. People actually bought fewer WP7 phones than the previous windows phones... that is not a good sign.

And now, its growth rate is slowing, just 0.1% since January: http://mashable.com/2012/07/02/microsoft-windows-phone-market-share/ Things didn't actually look so great between 2010 and 2011 either: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/gartner-windows-phone-market-share-crashes/16279 And another link, showing a significant drop from 2011 to 2012: http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=2017015

Since WP7 launched, nearly every cellular customer in the US has had their contracts expire and could have switched if they wanted. They haven't. If people liked the Metro UI, they'd use it. They aren't.

Average people don't identify with a UI but they recognize a brand. Everyone knows about the iPhone and the slew of Android phones. But few in comparison probably have ever heard of a Windows Phone. Windows Phone currently suffers many ails and the UI just doesn't matter at this point.

The fundamental problem with windows phone 7 is none of the partners are shipping high end phones. The major sales are all in devices like the galaxy s3, this is obviously an issue MS needed to address and may be exactly why they decided to jump into the hardware themself. Its not really an accurate call to say people dont like metro when people cannot get metro on any good devices. For instance I am with sprint, and the sales of WP7 were horrible at sprint. Well duh, they only had 1 phone, it was a small phone and the trend in phones was to bigger screens. So even though people like me were interested I had to go with an adroid phone because I had no choices.

So yes it could change things. If that is not a big deal to you then perhaps the ability to run office, xbl games and many other products you need is. This could be where tablets start to overtake low end laptops. Also realistically MS is one of the few companies that could actually do a really good job of pulling off the loss leader model on tablets / phones. The main reason is they have the killer apps, very much like nintendo. I would make some sacrifices to get office on my phone, I mean a real office from MS.

*sigh* baseless bashing

Lumia 900 is my daily driver, runs WP 7.5, best phone I've ever had.

It's Phide and it is what he does best. Trololololol..... I have a HTC HD7 WP 7.5 phone as well and I am extremely pleased with it. The thing just works and I do not have to root or hack it to make it do what I need it to do.

If that's the actual price, it'd be a nice one, but a 10 inch tablet is just way too big for me. Just like a phone with more than 4 inches of screen, they're large enough to be cumbersome to carry around. If I bought one, I'd just stand there with it in my hands, kinda looking funny at it because I would never have seen one that big before and not really be sure where I wanted to try to put it first. That'd probably end of spoiling the mood so no one would get to have any fun playing with it. Don't even get me started on figuring out a way to bag it so that its not as dangerous. Do they even make one you can roll down over it when they get that big?

Anyway, call me back when its three inches smaller because it might fit in more places and be easier to handle in general at that point.

Happy Bolivian Flag Day, everyone!

Price is similar to e-book reader. I wonder if it is a small 7 inch ebook reader.

Where do you live that you've never seen people using Ipads in public?

Around Seattle and Tacoma...you're not thinking I live in some random community with no technology or electrictiy are you? This isn't Texas. We're pretty much caught up with modern society. We have cars, a Space Needle, the Pacific Science Center (which is a great museum to visit with animatronic dinosaurs and the King Tut exhibit is in town!!), there's Starbucks too and stuff that pretty much doesn't exist along the Gulf Coast like libraries and paved roads.

We also have animal shelters with nice cats for adoption.

I like animals and cats. Mine is stalking for bugs and bats on the balcony right now :D

What. The. Fuck. are you talking about?! ;)

I've seen a lot of people around with iPads. Even in Seattle/Bellevue area. I bought an iPad because it was bigger than the Nook Color tablet that I had before (I'm anti-Apple, but it fit the needs that I had - FUCK STEVE JOBS AND HIS MAGICAL iPAD!). The 10" size is perfect for me. 7" is great for a lot of things, but reading books and magazines is easier on iPad, as well as a lot of the other applications I use.

Damn. That's probably the 5th time this week I didn't catch someones sarcasm. WTF is happening to me!? Old age, I guess.

:D

You may have contracted Dan_D disease. Have you mistakenly absorbed one of his posts lately?

I know I'm replying late and the hunt is probably over, but I hope your kitty had a good time! :)

That statement is almost 100% accurate!

:) It's okay...though I was hoping that the thing in my sig about being a troll would have helped make it more obvious that I'm not very serious. Maybe I should stick a few smiley faces in it to kinda help enhance the nonsense...hmmm.

Though, actually...I really _don't_ see a lot of iPads around. They're a pretty rare breed in Tacoma, I guess. Either that or I should crawl out from under the rock I live under more often.
