Microsoft Should Be Broken Up

In some ways, MS is a huge failure. MS hasn't managed to come out with a new successful product category in over 20 years. They have, and have only had, two successful products, the OS and Office. And, these two survive because of excessive federal IP laws and market entrenchment, not because MS is especially effective. Maybe keyboards, LOL.

as other's have mentioned, you have the xbox, not too mention their part on application development, and of course there are alot of juicy success on the enterprise market as well, even if the Kinect is tied to the xbox, its success has already taken off outside its supposedly gaming nature :D

Huh?

The old Apple computers were huge piles of CRAP!!!!

Hrmmm... it locked up again... Oh, now where did the HDD disappear to? AGGGHHHHH.. it wiped my disk again!

Yeah, this was the most common problems for Apple computers up until about 2005. Thinking about those old piles makes me want to blow one up with some dynamite.

Microsoft has grown too cumbersome and needs to be broken up,
Microsoft needs to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up,

Microsoft's, The Robot: Your mouth is buying a ticket your ass can't afford!

Microsoft: *buys VF....

Just like the Xbox360 and Windows 95. Just because something died a lot doesn't mean there weren't tons of them being purchased which make Apple lotsa dollars.

Big Oil hasn't come up with much new in a while either

i had to google 'vanity fair.' well anyhow, Microsoft has acquired a quite a bit.

Stupid article, vertical integration is incredibly important now.

Why did sony win with BR? Vertically integrated, they owned the studios, they owned the PS3 and they made them all come together and they were willing to take big losses to make that happen. HDDVD was the opposite no one company was willing to stick their neck out for the standard so it failed.

MS has the same dynamic, they make software and dont want to piss off their OEMs, but at the same time their OEMs never really want to stick their neckout for MS, in fact many of them actively try to stab MS in the back, think about HP with webOS, even samsung tries to develop their own phone OS.

The only support for the arguement is that sometimes MS does shady stuff to push xbox at the expense of windows. How much further would PC gaming be ahead at this point if MS focused on that and not Xbox, I can only imagine how integrated the PC would be and how good WMC might be.

Yes, that gave them a win, but overall Sony has been losing money.

I agree. Right now MS would have been far better off if they hadn't neglected PC gaming. MS is talking convergence of phones, tablets, and computers, but Xbox isn't compatible. iPad has iTunes, and Kindle Fire has Amazon's books and media. Entertainment is popular on tablets and phones, and MS is lacking.

I would bet that there will be support for Metro apps in some form on the next Xbox.

Same exact spot it would be right now. Don't pretend that just because MS pushes the Xbox that there aren't competitors, if these game developers won't write for the Xbox they will just write for the PS3 and Nintendo. Not to mention most of these developers had zero intention of ever writing for the PC to begin with so its not like its MS' fault for joining the party.

MS gave us DirectX, they also get heavily involved with the gaming community, its the gaming community that choses where it wants to go, MS isn't strong arming them to do anything.

I disagree with you.

XBL is considered to be the best service for any console by many, even if you disagree you can admit it is not inferior to other offerings. GFWL on the other hand is considered the worst trash content / DRM system on the PC vs it rivals in steam, origin and so on.

Lets take a look at media, WMC had was hitting a point of uncontended in vista, it was flexible well supported and a ton was getting better. Windows 7 roles around and tons of plugins break and it loses functions. Windows 8 and they wont even include it by default. See the trend, hmm why could that be, oh because they want you to use an XBOX as a media center not a PC. There is no reason they should not be pushing hard for both and letting the customer decide.

It used to be if you plugged an xbox controller in a a PC it would function as you expect, move the mouse, work in various games etc.. Now in windows 7 it just sits idle doing nothing unless you play a game specifically designed to use it. How could it be that as time progresses it loses functionality? The only explaination is they are purposely screwing over gaming on windows to push people to the xbox. Now you have to go get a program like joy2key make a customer profile in order to get it to work like it used to work. Pretty sad really we are going backwards.

How about the fact that flagship games like halo basically never come to the PC? Clearly they are showing favoritism. How about the fact MS unlike even sony will not allow much of any cross platform play with the Xbox and windows even though both are their own products? Once again they reduce the value of their windows ecosystem to push the xbox ecosystem.

They way MS thinks is that you are going to buy both, but that is backfiring instead people are saying, well if I game on a xbox, then I dont need to game on my computer so I can buy a mac.
