I don't get why people keep comparing these terrible things MS does with Windows to Apple. Apple has done many things to complain about, but Apple hasn't done anything nearly as bad with a desktop OS as the crap MS keeps pulling with Win8/10. Unless of course you're equivocating iOS with desktop Windows, but that's a strange and fairly useless comparison. OS X is still a compelling productivity desktop OS.
edit: Yesterday I threw in the original 500GB spin drive in my craptop and first marveled at how absolutely, unquestionably awful Windows 8.x was. Then I laughed to myself as every single broken idea that MS built into Win8.x frustrated basic attempts like checking for updates with Windows Update. Failing that, which the advice suggests letting it sit around for hours, I took advantage of the last day of the free Win10 upgrade and let the standalone upgrade assistant run. I have no intention of using that mess of an OS either (Win10), but the next person who gets this laptop isn't getting the SSD and I can't in good conscience sell or give it to someone else running that disaster Win8.x. The HDD came out with an activated OS upgrade, and it will sit on a shelf until I buy another laptop.
